What to do if…
a cash withdrawal fails but your account is still charged
Short answer
Record the ATM details, then contact your bank/building society using their “cash machine/ATM dispute” route—unless your bank’s guidance says to wait briefly for an automatic reversal, in which case set a reminder and contact as soon as that window ends (or sooner if you’re stuck without money).
Do not do these things
- Don’t keep retrying the same withdrawal (it can create multiple debits and make it harder to untangle).
- Don’t throw away the receipt or walk off without noting the ATM location and time.
- Don’t share your PIN or hand your card to anyone “helping” at the machine.
- Don’t assume it will fix itself if the debit is affecting your available balance and you need the money for essentials.
- Don’t report it as “fraud” if you initiated the withdrawal (use the bank’s cash machine/ATM dispute route).
What to do now
-
Check whether the debit is pending or completed, and note your bank’s advice for ATM disputes.
Some banks advise waiting up to 48 working hours before reporting a pending ATM dispute, in case an automatic reversal happens overnight. If the transaction is already completed/posted, you need the money for essentials, or you risk fees/returned payments, contact your bank now. -
Capture the key facts immediately (this is what fixes things fastest).
Write down or photograph:- Date and exact time (as close as you can)
- Amount you tried to withdraw
- ATM location (shop name/street/town) and ATM operator name (often shown on the machine)
- Any ATM ID/terminal number on the machine
- What the screen said (e.g., “cash dispensed” / “unable to process” / timeout)
- Keep the receipt (or take a clear photo of it)
-
Contact your bank/building society and raise a “cash machine/ATM dispute.”
Use in-app chat/secure message if available (good for a written record), or call. Tell them:
“I attempted a cash withdrawal, received no cash, but my account was debited. Please raise an ATM/cash machine dispute.”
Ask for:- A reference/case number
- Whether they expect an automatic reversal and (if so) what timeframe they use
- What support they can offer today if this leaves you short (for example, help avoiding knock-on fees or urgent account support)
-
If the ATM is not your bank’s machine, you can also contact the ATM operator (optional).
Use the phone number on the ATM. Provide the same details. If they tell you to “speak to your bank,” that’s normal—your bank can still pursue the dispute through the card/ATM network process. -
Protect yourself from knock-on harm today.
If bills are due and this debit will cause problems, act now:- Tell your bank it’s an urgent hardship issue and ask what they can do to reduce avoidable charges.
- If you can safely do so, move money from another account to cover essential payments while the dispute is investigated.
-
Monitor for a reversal and keep everything together.
Check your account at least once daily for the reversal/refund, and keep your notes/photos/receipt until it’s fully resolved.
What can wait
- You don’t need to decide right now whether to switch banks or close your account.
- You don’t need to write a long complaint immediately—first get the dispute logged with the correct details.
- You don’t need to argue with the shop staff where the ATM sits (they usually can’t access the machine logs).
Important reassurance
This happens more often than people think—cash machines and bank systems can “desync” and then correct later. Reporting it with clear details is exactly what you’re supposed to do.
Scope note
These are first steps to stabilise things and trigger the correct ATM dispute process. If it’s not resolved, the next stage is usually your bank’s formal complaints process, and then escalation routes if needed.
Important note
This is general information, not legal or financial advice. Processes and timelines vary by bank, ATM operator, and whether the transaction is pending or completed. If you’re in immediate hardship (e.g., can’t access essentials), say that clearly to your bank and ask what urgent support they can offer.
