What to do if…
a rideshare or taxi driver’s conversation becomes sexual and you feel trapped in the situation
Short answer
Your priority is to get to a safer, more public situation as soon as you can. If you feel in immediate danger, call 999.
Do not do these things
- Don’t argue, explain, or try to “teach a lesson” if it might escalate the driver.
- Don’t feel you have to be polite, laugh, or “play along” to keep things calm.
- Don’t accept a detour, “quick stop,” or offer to be dropped somewhere more private.
- Don’t share personal details (where you live, if you’re alone, relationship status) if you can avoid it.
- Don’t wait to see if it gets worse if you already feel unsafe.
What to do now
- Switch to “get out safely” mode. Use a neutral, practical reason to end or pause the trip:
- “I feel sick—please pull in at the next petrol station / busy shop.”
- “I need to take a call—please stop at the next safe place.”
Aim for a staffed, well-lit, busy location (petrol station, supermarket entrance, hotel lobby, transport hub).
- Make it easier for someone to find you.
- If you’re in a rideshare app, share your trip status/location with a trusted person.
- If you can’t do that, send a short message like: “In a taxi now. I feel unsafe. I’m heading to [busy place].”
- Use emergency options if you feel at risk.
- If you feel in immediate danger, call 999.
- If you can’t speak safely, stay on the line and follow the operator’s prompts as best you can.
- Create a low-conflict exit at the stop.
- If you can, end the trip/pay only once you’re at the busy place.
- Take your belongings first.
- Step out and move toward people/staff (inside the shop/lobby), not to a quiet pavement corner.
- Once you’re away from the vehicle, don’t re-engage.
- If the driver follows or won’t leave, go back inside and ask staff to call 999.
- Capture only what’s easy and safe (optional).
If it won’t put you at risk, note or screenshot: time, pickup/dropoff area, car registration, driver name/badge (taxis often display a licence), route/trip receipt. Don’t do this while it would escalate the situation. - After you’re safe, report it through the most relevant channel (optional, but can protect others).
- Rideshare: report in-app as a safety concern as soon as you can.
- Taxi/private hire: report to the operator (if booked) and to your local taxi/private hire licensing authority. If the journey was in London, you can report to TfL Taxi & Private Hire.
What can wait
- You do not need to decide right now whether to report to police, the company, or the licensing authority.
- You do not need to write a perfect account immediately—getting safe first is enough.
- You do not need to respond to messages from the driver/platform while you’re still shaken.
Important reassurance
Freezing, going quiet, laughing nervously, or being “overly polite” can be a normal safety response. Feeling trapped can make even “just words” feel frightening—trust your instincts about your safety.
Scope note
These are first steps to get you safe and stabilised. If you want to report or get ongoing support, you may choose to do that later with help.
Important note
This is general information, not legal or medical advice. If you are in immediate danger, call 999. If you’re safe now but want police advice or to report, you can contact police via 101 or online.
