What to do if…
a rideshare profile photo or license plate does not match the car that arrives
Short answer
Do not get in. Move to a safer spot, cancel the ride in the app, and request a new ride (or use another way home). If you feel threatened or the person won’t leave you alone, call 999.
Do not do these things
- Don’t get in “just to confirm” or because you feel awkward saying no.
- Don’t accept an off-app ride (cash/bank transfer, “I’ll cancel on my end”, “same price”).
- Don’t hand over your phone, show a verification code/PIN, or share personal details to “prove” who you are.
- Don’t stand close to the window or lean in to argue about it—keep space and an exit path.
- Don’t let urgency (rain, lateness, surge pricing) override a mismatch.
What to do now
- Create space and get to a safer pause. Step away and move to a well-lit, busier place (shop entrance, hotel lobby, station concourse) where you can still see the pickup area from a distance.
- Check only what the app shows. Compare the arriving car to the in-app details (registration/number plate, make/model, driver name/photo). If any key detail doesn’t match, treat it as the wrong vehicle.
- Cancel the ride in the app. Choose the closest safety-related reason if offered (for example, “driver/car didn’t match”). If you’re charged a fee, don’t deal with it at the curb—leave it for later.
- Stop interaction quickly if the driver approaches. One firm line is enough (“This isn’t my ride.”). Then stop engaging and move nearer other people or inside.
- Save just enough information while you’re safe. Screenshot the trip screen (driver + vehicle details). If you can do so discreetly, note the actual car’s number plate and the time/location.
- Report it in the app once you’re safe. Use the app’s help/safety reporting flow for “wrong vehicle / wrong driver / plate didn’t match”, and attach your screenshot.
- Rebook from a safer pickup point. Pick a staffed or public location (main entrance, hotel lobby, outside a venue with security) rather than a quiet side street.
- If you suspect an unlicensed taxi/minicab: don’t use it. When you’re safe, report it to TfL if you saw it in London, or to the local council licensing team elsewhere. If you’re in immediate danger, call 999.
What can wait
- You don’t need to decide whether it was a mistake or a scam right now—mismatch means “no ride.”
- You don’t need to resolve cancellation fees, ratings, or complaints while you’re still at the pickup point.
- You don’t need perfect evidence; a screenshot and basic notes are enough.
Important reassurance
It’s normal to freeze or second-guess yourself in this moment, especially if you’re tired or alone. A mismatch is a valid reason to refuse a ride—your safety matters more than politeness.
Scope note
These are first steps to reduce immediate risk and get you somewhere safer. Follow-up reporting, refunds, and any formal complaints can be done once you’re calm and secure.
Important note
This is general safety information, not legal advice. If you feel in immediate danger, call 999. If you’re unsure but concerned, it’s reasonable to cancel, move to a safer place, and rebook.
