What to do if…
someone starts live-streaming you or your location in a way that feels targeted

Short answer

Get to a safer pause and treat it like a personal safety incident: create distance, get support, and report it (platform + police) if you feel threatened or it’s escalating.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t try to “win” the livestream by arguing, grabbing their phone, or physically confronting them (it can escalate and put you at legal/physical risk).
  • Don’t lead them to your home, workplace, or a quiet isolated area “to talk”.
  • Don’t post your real-time location to “explain” what’s happening.
  • Don’t hang around trying to collect perfect evidence if it keeps you exposed.

What to do now

  1. Create a safer pause (distance + witnesses). Move to a busier, staffed place (shop/café/hotel lobby/public building) or closer to other people. If you’re with someone, stay together.
  2. If you feel in immediate danger, call 999. If you can’t speak safely, you can still call 999 and use the silent call option. If it’s not an emergency but feels targeted, call 101 (or report online via your local force) and say: “Someone is live-streaming me and my location and it feels targeted. I’m worried it could escalate.”
  3. Stop your location leaking from your own phone. Turn off any live location sharing (maps/family sharing), and turn off location access for social apps until you’re safe elsewhere.
  4. Get quick, usable evidence only from a safe spot. Once you’re separated/in a staffed place, note:
    • platform, account name/handle, and any visible link
    • time, place, and what they said (especially threats or “come find them” language)
    • a description of the person and any vehicle If you can capture a screenshot/screen recording without re-exposing yourself, do so. Otherwise, don’t.
  5. Report the livestream in the app immediately. Use the platform’s Report function during the live if possible (and report the account). If a friend can help, ask them to report too while you focus on staying safe.
  6. Tell one trusted person what’s happening right now. Share your plan and a safe location (not your current exposure point). If you’re alone, ask staff/security to stay nearby while you contact police or arrange a taxi/home lift.
  7. If this feels targeted or likely to repeat, get specialist advice once you’re safe. The National Stalking Helpline can help you think through immediate next protective steps if this is part of a pattern.

What can wait

  • You do not need to decide right now whether this is “stalking”, “harassment”, or “doxxing”, or prove intent.
  • You do not need to write a perfect statement or collect every clip before contacting police/platforms.
  • You do not need to contact the streamer directly or negotiate removal in the moment.

Important reassurance

Feeling panicky and exposed is a normal reaction when someone broadcasts you in real time. Prioritising distance, witnesses, and simple reporting steps is a sensible response.

Scope note

These are first steps to stabilise the situation and reduce immediate risk. If this becomes repeated behaviour, you may need additional support and safety planning through police and specialist services.

Important note

This is general information, not legal advice. If you think you’re at risk of immediate harm, call 999. If you’re not in immediate danger but feel targeted, report it to police (101/online) and the platform as soon as you can.
