Short answer

Stay calm, show your passport and any lawful-stay evidence you have, and ask exactly what “registration confirmation” they mean so you can get an official duplicate or have it verified by the local issuing office.

Do not do these things

  • Do not hand your passport to anyone who is not clearly an official. If an official needs to hold it, ask where it is going and for an official receipt or identifying details (name/badge/office).
  • Do not make unofficial payments or pay without an official receipt and clear written basis for the payment.
  • Do not invent a document number, address, or “proof” you don’t have.
  • Do not sign anything you do not understand (ask for an interpreter or a written explanation you understand).
  • Do not argue about the rule in the street; focus on verification and the fastest legitimate way to fix it.

What to do now

  1. Create a safer pause and clarify the request.
    Ask: “What is the exact name of the registration document, and which office/system issues it?” (In some places this is hotel/host registration; in others it’s a local residence/address registration.)

  2. Show what you do have, immediately.
    Offer your passport and any evidence of lawful stay you can access quickly, for example:

    • visa / residence permit card (if you have one)
    • entry stamp or other arrival evidence (if available)
    • accommodation booking confirmation showing the address and dates
  3. Ask for verification instead of proof.
    Say you never received the confirmation and ask if they can:

    • check the registration in their system, or
    • direct you to the correct office to obtain a duplicate, or

    Message/call the hotel/host/landlord and ask for:

    • a copy/photo/PDF of the registration submission or receipt (if they registered you),
    • the name of the authority it was submitted to,
    • the date/time it was submitted,
    • any reference number.
      If you booked via an app, request a written message in-app confirming your stay dates and address.
  5. If you’re being directed to an office, make it practical and documented.
    Ask for the office name/address and what to bring. If they give you a written note or official instruction, keep it; if appropriate, take a photo of it.

  6. If you are detained or taken to a station, request UK consular contact.
    Ask to contact the nearest British embassy, high commission or consulate (or for them to notify UK consular services). Keep your explanation simple: you have ID, but you never received the local registration proof and need to verify/replace it.

  7. Get an official “replacement/confirmation” in the fastest format available.
    At the local authority/tourism/police registration office (varies by country), ask for:

    • a printed confirmation,
    • a stamped copy,
    • or an email/SMS confirmation sent to you on the spot.
      Before leaving, check your name, passport number, dates, and address for typos.
  8. Create a backup you can show quickly next time.
    Save the confirmation in two places (phone + email/cloud) and keep an offline screenshot.

  • You do not need to decide today whether to complain about a host/hotel or argue about who was responsible.
  • You do not need to resolve longer-term residency/immigration questions on the spot—focus on getting a duplicate/verification first.
