What to do if…
you cannot access email or cloud storage that contains your passport scan and vital bookings

Short answer

Run two tracks at the same time: use your provider’s official account-recovery route, and separately reconstruct the minimum booking details you need by contacting each travel provider directly (airline/hotel/rail) using your name, dates, and payment details.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t use password-reset links from unexpected emails/texts/calls; open the provider’s official app or type the provider’s website yourself.
  • Don’t keep guessing passwords until you trigger a longer lockout.
  • Don’t read one-time codes aloud to anyone, and don’t let a stranger “help” by taking your phone.
  • Don’t factory reset or wipe your device unless you’re sure you can sign back in afterwards.
  • Don’t assume you must have your passport scan to proceed; most bookings can be re-sent without it.

What to do now

  1. Stabilise and reduce risk (1 minute). Put your passport and payment cards somewhere secure on your person. If you’re on public Wi-Fi, switch to mobile data (or a trusted hotspot). If that’s not possible, avoid logging in until you’re on a safer connection.
  2. Identify what’s actually failing. Is it:
    • password/username,
    • 2-step verification (codes not arriving / lost phone / new SIM),
    • or a possible compromise (unexpected alerts, password changed, new devices)?
  3. Start official recovery for the one account that unlocks everything. Choose one provider and follow its official flow end-to-end:
    • Google/Gmail/Drive: use Google’s “can’t sign in” / account recovery.
    • Microsoft/Outlook/OneDrive: use Microsoft’s sign-in helper, then the account recovery form guidance if needed.
    • Apple/iCloud: try reset via a trusted Apple device first; if you don’t have one, use Apple’s official reset/account recovery steps (including iforgot).
  4. In parallel: rebuild bookings from the outside (usually quickest).
    • Airline: use the airline website/app Manage booking / Find booking / Resend confirmation. If you don’t have the booking reference, contact the airline and ask them to locate it using your full name, route, travel date, and the card used to pay.
    • Accommodation: call/message the property via its official website/phone number. Provide name + dates and ask them to confirm and resend details to a reachable email address.
    • Rail/coach/ferry: use the operator’s retrieve-booking tool or support with name/date/card details.
  5. Use your bank/app to recover “proof you paid.” Open your banking app and note the merchant name, amount, and date for each booking. This is often enough for providers to find your reservation even without an email.
  6. Create a clean “working inbox” for the next 24 hours. If you can’t access any email at all, create a new email address on your phone and use it only for: re-sent confirmations and recovery updates.
  7. If you suspect account takeover, treat it as security first.
    • Reset your password only via official recovery pages.
    • When back in, sign out of other devices/sessions and check recovery phone/email so you can regain access again if needed.
  8. If your UK passport is lost/stolen abroad (or you don’t have it available and must travel soon):
    • Report/cancel it via GOV.UK if it’s lost or stolen.
    • If you need urgent travel and can’t use a valid UK passport, check whether you’re eligible to apply for a UK Emergency Travel Document from your location.
  9. Write an offline “minimum pack.” On paper or in an offline note, record: booking references, ticket numbers, hotel address, insurer emergency contact, and your reachable email address.

What can wait

  • You do not need to reorganise your entire document archive right now.
  • You do not need to rebuild security perfectly today (passkeys, password manager changes, etc.).
  • You do not need to decide about police reports unless there was theft, or your insurer/provider asks for one.

Important reassurance

Lockouts mid-trip are common when phones are lost, SIMs change, or 2-step verification breaks. Even without your passport scan or original confirmation emails, airlines and hotels can usually locate and resend bookings using basic details.

Scope note

These are first steps only to get you moving again and prevent avoidable mistakes. Later, you may want deeper account-security support, insurer help, or consular guidance depending on what caused the lockout.

Important note

This is general information, not legal advice. Requirements vary by provider and the country you’re in, so rely on official recovery pages and official consular guidance for your situation.
