What to do if…
you find your nude photos or videos posted online and the posts are spreading
Short answer
Get to a calmer, private moment, then start removal actions immediately: report the posts on the platform(s) and contact specialist UK support that can help with takedowns. If you’re being threatened or feel unsafe, contact police now.
Do not do these things
- Don’t negotiate, pay, or “prove” anything to the person posting or threatening to post (this often escalates and doesn’t stop re-sharing).
- Don’t reply publicly in-thread or start arguing with accounts sharing it (it can boost visibility and screenshots).
- Don’t send, forward, or upload the images/videos to other people “for evidence” (you can preserve proof without re-distributing).
- Don’t keep refreshing comments or searching for every repost right now (it can intensify panic and doesn’t help removal).
- Don’t delete everything in a panic (keep a minimal record first so you can report and request removal effectively).
What to do now
-
Get to a safer pause and check immediate safety.
Put your phone on “Do Not Disturb”, move to a private place, and take a few slow breaths. If you’re in immediate danger, call 999. -
Capture minimal proof that helps removal (without spreading it).
Save the URLs, account usernames, and approximate timestamps. Take screenshots that show the page + account name + URL. Avoid downloading the file or re-uploading it anywhere. -
Report the post inside each platform/app right now.
Use the in-app report flow and choose the closest option to non-consensual intimate imagery / intimate images shared without consent (use the same route even if the content is a deepfake or synthetic). If it’s on multiple sites, report the largest/fastest-spreading ones first. -
Get supported takedown help (so you’re not doing this alone).
- Revenge Porn Helpline (UK, 18+): 0345 6000 459 (Mon–Fri, 10am–4pm) or help@revengepornhelpline.org.uk. They can help with platform/site takedown requests and next steps.
- Report Harmful Content: helps you find the right reporting routes and links across platforms for intimate image abuse.
-
Use hash-matching to help reduce re-uploads on participating platforms.
Create a case on StopNCII.org. It creates a digital “fingerprint” (hash) from the image/video on your device, and participating platforms can use that to help detect matches and limit re-sharing. -
If you’re under 18 (or anyone in the images might be under 18), treat it as urgent and do not share it.
Use Report Remove (Childline/NSPCC) for confidential help removing youth sexual images. Do not forward or upload the content to anyone to “show” them. -
If there are threats, stalking, doxxing, or you feel unsafe, contact police.
Call 999 if it’s urgent or you feel in immediate danger. If it’s not an emergency, contact police via 101 or your local force’s online reporting route, and say it’s intimate image abuse (and mention any threats or demands).
What can wait
- You do not need to decide today whether to confront the person responsible, post a public statement, or tell everyone you know.
- You do not need to gather “perfect” evidence—links + page-level screenshots are enough to start removal.
- You do not need to keep monitoring or reading reactions. Focus on reporting + takedown support first.
Important reassurance
Shock responses are common here: shaking, nausea, racing thoughts, feeling unreal. None of that means you’re “overreacting”. The responsibility is on the person who shared it, not you. Even when something spreads quickly, coordinated reporting and specialist takedown support can still reduce reach and harm.
Scope note
These are first steps to stabilise the moment and start takedown actions. Later steps (legal advice, longer-term safety planning, workplace/school support) can come after you’ve slowed the spread and you feel more steady.
Important note
This is general information, not legal advice. If you are in immediate danger call 999. If you can only do one thing right now, save the link(s) and then contact a specialist helpline for supported takedown.
