What to do if…
you miss a connection because of immigration or document checks and you are now stranded

Short answer

Go straight to your airline’s transfer/customer service desk (and use the airline app/phone while walking) to get rebooked before you leave the airport area or spend money.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t exit the airport/leave the secure area “just to think” until you know whether your baggage, entry conditions, and rebooking options will be affected.
  • Don’t buy a new ticket immediately (especially if you’re on one itinerary) until the airline confirms what they can do.
  • Don’t separate your passport/ID, boarding passes, bag tags, and booking reference—keep them together and accessible.
  • Don’t assume support is automatic: immigration/document-check delays are often treated as outside the airline’s control, but it’s still worth asking for help.
  • Don’t queue in two long lines with no plan—start the airline rebooking process first, and call/message the airline while you queue.

What to do now

  1. Stabilise your immigration/document position first.
    • If you’re still with border/document officials, follow instructions and ask: “Am I free to go to my airline now?”
    • If you’re not free to go, ask to contact your airline (and, if needed, your consulate) from where you are.
  2. Start rebooking immediately (use two channels at once).
    • Walk to the airline’s connections/transfer desk or customer service desk.
    • In parallel, use the airline app/phone/chat and say: “Missed connection after immigration/document checks — please rebook me to my final destination.”
  3. Work out whether you’re on one itinerary or separate tickets (this changes your leverage).
    • One itinerary (single booking reference): airlines often have a “misconnect” process. Ask them to reroute you and send the updated itinerary to your email/app.
    • Separate tickets: treat this as a new disruption—ask the onward airline what their missed-flight options/fees are before buying anything.
  4. If the airline won’t rebook you, escalate quickly and get the reason.
    • Ask: “Can I speak to a supervisor?” and “Please note the reason you’re refusing to rebook in my record or provide it in writing.”
    • Ask whether they can endorse you to a partner airline or offer a lower “rescue” fare.
  5. Sort checked baggage before it becomes a second emergency.
    • Ask the airline: “Where is my checked bag now, and what happens to it on my new routing?”
    • If you had already collected bags to re-check, ask where to store/re-check them while you wait for rebooking.
  6. Ask for practical support while you wait — but keep expectations realistic.
    • If your situation involves a covered delay/cancellation/denied boarding on a flight within UK passenger-rights coverage, the airline should provide care and assistance (food/drink, communications, and accommodation/transport if overnight).
    • If the miss was solely due to immigration/document checks, support may depend on airline policy or travel insurance—still ask: “Do you provide meal vouchers or a hotel when the next option is tomorrow?”
  7. Create a minimal record (30 seconds, not a project).
    • Photo: departure board showing the missed flight/next options, any desk-hours signs, and your new booking.
    • Note: the time you entered the immigration/document-check queue and when you were cleared.
  8. If you’re stuck overnight, reduce risk and decisions.
    • Stay in a staffed, well-lit area; keep valuables on you.
    • If you must book accommodation yourself, choose something close and cancellable, and keep receipts.
  9. Tell one person where you are.
    • Message a trusted contact with your airport/terminal and new estimated arrival time.

What can wait

  • You don’t need to decide now whether you’ll pursue compensation, argue fault, or make a formal complaint.
  • You don’t need to write a long explanation tonight—just keep proof and receipts.
  • You don’t need to make big trip decisions (cancelling everything, buying expensive alternatives) until you’ve exhausted rebooking options.

Important reassurance

This is a common, stressful scenario—especially where connections require immigration checks and re-screening. Feeling panicky is normal. Your only job right now is to get rebooked, secure your bags, and minimise irreversible choices.

Scope note

This is first-step guidance for the first hours after a missed connection. Claims, refunds, and complaints are best handled later when you’re safe and rested.

Important note

This is general information, not legal advice. What the airline must do (and what it will do) depends on your itinerary, ticketing (one itinerary vs separate tickets), and the reason you missed the connection. If anything about your immigration/document situation is unresolved, prioritise following official instructions and getting clarity on what you are permitted to do next.
