What to do if…
you realise your passport was left in an airport security tray after you walk away
Short answer
Go straight back to the security checkpoint (or the nearest staff member) and ask for the security supervisor and the airport’s lost-property process for passports.
Do not do these things
- Do not leave the airport “to search later” if there’s any chance you can return to the checkpoint now.
- Do not assume your airline can retrieve it for you (airline staff often can’t access security-held items).
- Do not post photos of your passport or your location on social media while you’re trying to recover it.
- Do not delay protective action if staff cannot quickly confirm it’s securely held and being returned to you soon (a genuinely lost passport should be cancelled as soon as you reasonably can).
What to do now
- Turn around and go back to security immediately. Go to the exact lane/checkpoint if you can. Tell staff: “I left my passport in a tray at this checkpoint moments ago.”
- Ask for the security supervisor and request a “tray/belt check.” Passports are often moved quickly to a secure desk or office—ask where passports are held for that terminal.
- If you can’t re-enter the screening area, don’t force it. Go to the nearest airport help desk/information point (or any uniformed airport staff) and ask them to contact security and direct you to the correct point of contact.
- Give the details that let them find it fast: time you passed through, lane number (if you remember), terminal, a description of the passport cover, and your flight details/boarding pass. Ask them to log it and give you a reference/case number.
- File an airport lost-property report immediately (even if staff are still searching). Airports manage this differently; submit a report through the airport’s lost-property/lost-and-found channel with the same details.
- Decide quickly whether this is “temporarily held” or “truly missing.”
- If staff confirm it’s been found and is securely held, ask exactly where/when you can collect it and what ID they need from you.
- If staff cannot confirm it’s found and being returned soon, treat it as missing and move to the next step.
- If it’s not promptly confirmed found, cancel the passport as soon as you reasonably can (ideally the same day). Cancelling reduces the risk of misuse, but it also means that specific passport is no longer usable for travel even if it later turns up.
- If you are abroad and need to travel urgently, check whether you’re eligible for a UK Emergency Travel Document. This is generally for urgent, unplanned travel while outside the UK and eligibility criteria apply. If you’re not eligible (or travel isn’t urgent), you’ll usually need to replace your passport instead.
What can wait
- You do not need to decide today whether to make a police report unless you’re told it’s stolen or your insurer requires it.
- You do not need to start a full replacement application while airport/security staff are actively searching and you still have a realistic chance of immediate recovery.
- You do not need to contact banks or change passwords unless you also lost other items (wallet/phone) or you’re told there’s suspected misuse.
Important reassurance
This happens a lot—security trays and time pressure make it easy to walk off. The best recoveries usually come from going back immediately, getting the right supervisor, and giving precise lane/time details.
Scope note
These are first steps to recover the passport fast and prevent irreversible mistakes. Replacement, fees, and longer-term travel plans can be handled once you’ve stabilised the situation (and know whether it’s actually gone).
Important note
This is general information, not legal advice. Airport procedures vary by country and by airport. If you are abroad and cannot recover your passport quickly, official consular channels are usually the safest next step.
