What to do if…
you receive repeated calls from an unknown number claiming they are outside your location and you cannot confirm it

Short answer

Stop engaging with the caller, get yourself to a safer pause (inside, doors locked), and treat it as real until you can calmly rule it out. If you feel unsafe or think someone may actually be outside, call 999.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t go outside “to check” or open the door because of the call.
  • Don’t argue with the caller, threaten them back, or try to “catch them out”.
  • Don’t confirm personal details (your address, who’s with you, whether you’re alone).
  • Don’t follow instructions like “come to the window” or “step outside for a second”.
  • Don’t post about it on social media in the moment (it can reveal you’re alone or where you are).
  • Don’t assume caller ID proves who it is (numbers can be spoofed).

What to do now

  1. End the call and stop engaging. Let further calls go to voicemail. If your phone allows it, turn on “silence unknown callers” / do-not-disturb with exceptions for your contacts.
  2. Move to a safer position inside. Lock doors and accessible windows. Turn on outside lights if you can do so without going near a door. Keep children/pets away from entrances.
  3. Check without exposing yourself. Look through a peephole, upstairs window, or camera if you have one. Don’t stand silhouetted in a lit doorway/window, and don’t shout through the door.
  4. If you feel in immediate danger or think someone may be outside: call 999. Say you’re receiving repeated calls from an unknown number claiming they’re outside, and you can’t confirm it. Follow the call handler’s instructions.
  5. If you can’t speak safely when calling 999 from a mobile: use the “Silent Solution”. Stay on the line, listen to the operator’s questions, and if you can make a small sound (like coughing/tapping) do so. If prompted, press 55 to confirm it’s a genuine emergency so you can be put through to the police.
  6. If it doesn’t feel immediate but it is abusive/threatening: call 101. Report what was said and provide times, any voicemails, and screenshots of your call log.
  7. Contact your phone provider about malicious/nuisance calls. Ask what they can do right now (blocking options, spam filtering, and what evidence they need). Block the number on your handset as well.
  8. Bring in a calm third party. Text/call a trusted neighbour/friend to stay on the phone with you. If you have building security/concierge, ask them to check communal areas—not to confront anyone.

What can wait

  • Deciding whether to change your number or buy extra security devices.
  • Writing a detailed timeline (a quick note of times/voicemails is enough for now).
  • Making complaints to regulators or chasing the caller to “prove” anything.
  • Contacting everyone you know—one trusted person is enough right now.

Important reassurance

Calls like this are often meant to scare you into exposing yourself (opening the door, stepping outside, confirming you’re alone). Taking simple safety steps and calling for help if you feel at risk is a reasonable response.

Scope note

These are first steps to keep you safe and prevent irreversible mistakes. If the calls continue, you may want more tailored support from your phone provider and police.

Important note

This guide is general information, not legal advice. If you believe you’re in danger or someone is outside and you feel unsafe, call 999.
