What to do if…
you return to where you parked and your vehicle has been towed or relocated unexpectedly

Short answer

Assume it was moved by enforcement first: quickly check nearby streets for a relocation, then use the official tracing route (TRACE in London, otherwise your local council/police non-emergency) to confirm where it is before you report it stolen.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t report it as stolen until you’ve checked towing/relocation channels first (a “missing” car is often removal/relocation).
  • Don’t pay anyone who approaches you in person offering “help” finding it—use official contact routes you look up yourself.
  • Don’t leave without photographing the bay/lines/signs and your exact location first (this is hard to recreate later).
  • Don’t assume one pound or one authority will have it: in London, borough removals usually show on TRACE; elsewhere it may be the council or police (and sometimes other official routes).
  • Don’t delay once you’ve found it—storage charges can add up.

What to do now

  1. Pause, confirm your exact spot, and check for a nearby relocation (5–10 minutes).
Walk the same street and the immediately adjacent streets (both directions). Vehicles are sometimes relocated (not taken to a pound) for works, events, emergencies, or safety.
  2. Photograph evidence before you do anything else.
Take clear photos of: bay markings, restriction signs/time plates, any temporary suspension notices, and a wide shot showing the street name/nearest building number.
  3. If you’re in London: check TRACE immediately.
Use the official TRACE service to see if a London borough removed it, whether it was relocated or taken to a pound, and where to collect it.
  4. If you’re outside London (or TRACE shows nothing): contact the likely remover.
    • Local council parking services: many councils have a “removed vehicle” page/number and can confirm removals or relocations.
    • If you still can’t confirm removal, call 101 (police non-emergency) to ask whether the vehicle was removed/impounded.
  5. If you still can’t locate it via council/police routes, use the GOV.UK removal/impound guidance.
Follow the official “get a clamped or impounded vehicle released” route to identify who to contact to find where it was taken (this includes a national contractor contact used for some removals).
  6. Once you locate it, ask what you must bring before you travel.
Requirements vary, but you will often be asked for photo ID plus proof you’re entitled to collect the vehicle (for example, keeper/ownership documents) and proof you’re insured to drive it. Confirm opening hours and payment methods.
  7. Go to the pound (or relocation address) as soon as you can safely manage.
Bring your keys, phone charger, and a way to pay. Ask for an itemised receipt showing charges and the recorded reason for removal.
  8. If you suspect theft after checks:
If official tracing/council/police can’t locate it and you have reasons to suspect theft, report it via the police route and inform your insurer.

What can wait

  • You don’t need to decide right now whether to challenge a penalty/fees. First: locate and recover the vehicle (or confirm theft).
  • You don’t need to argue on the phone about whether signage was fair—just collect the facts (where it is, what to bring, how to retrieve it).
  • You don’t need to contact multiple third parties; keep comms minimal until you know who removed it.

Important reassurance

This is a very common and very unsettling situation. A “missing” car is often enforcement removal or a relocation rather than theft. Taking a calm, methodical route (nearby check → TRACE/council → 101/GOV.UK route) gets you to certainty faster.

Scope note

These are first steps to find and recover a towed/relocated vehicle and prevent expensive or irreversible mistakes. Disputes, refunds, or formal challenges depend on who removed it and can be dealt with after you’re steady.

Important note

This is general information for immediate next steps, not legal advice. Processes and required documents vary by area and by who removed the vehicle. If anything feels unsafe (e.g., confrontation), leave and use the police non-emergency route.
