What to do if…
you spot someone signalling to another person while watching you handle cash or valuables
Short answer
Stop handling the cash/valuables, secure them, and move to a staffed, well-lit place (inside a shop, bank branch, or near security) straight away. If you think a theft/robbery is about to happen or is happening, call 999.
Do not do these things
- Don’t keep counting money, showing valuables, or finishing the transaction “quickly” while you feel watched.
- Don’t confront them, follow them, or try to “catch them out”.
- Don’t move to a quieter spot to “get space” (side streets, empty car parks, stairwells, the back of a queue).
- Don’t take out your phone and start filming if it keeps you in place or distracts you from getting to safety.
- Don’t walk straight to your car with cash visible, or unlock your car while scanning your bag or wallet.
- Don’t hand over your wallet/phone to a stranger who approaches with a sudden “urgent” request.
What to do now
- Cover and secure what you’re handling immediately. Put cash away, close your wallet, zip your bag, and hold it close to your body. If you’re at an ATM, finish/cancel promptly and put your card and cash away before you turn.
- Move to a safer “anchor point” as soon as you can. Aim for somewhere with staff and cameras: inside the nearest shop, bank branch, station concourse, staffed petrol station, or to a help point/security desk. If you’re already inside a shop, step to the counter and stay with staff.
- Create distance without signalling panic. Take a few calm steps sideways/back to break proximity, keep your hands free, and avoid letting anyone get behind you. If someone closes in, keep a clear arm’s length of space.
- Make the situation visible to staff. In a shop/bank: tell staff simply, “I think I’m being watched for my cash/valuables. Can I stay here a moment and could you call security?” Stay at the counter rather than near the door.
- If you’re on rail/station property, use the right channel. If it’s not an emergency but you’re worried, you can text British Transport Police on 61016 (or call 0800 40 50 40) with your location and a brief description. If there’s immediate danger or a crime in progress, call 999.
- Choose police contact based on urgency.
- Call 999 if you feel you’re about to be robbed, someone is threatening you, you’re being blocked from leaving, or a theft/robbery is happening now.
- Call 101 (or report online) if they’ve left but you want to report suspicious behaviour, especially if you’re in a bank/shop that can keep CCTV.
- If you think you’re being followed after leaving the anchor point: go back inside to staff, or enter another busy place. Do not lead anyone to your home. If you must move, head towards a well-lit main road or staffed venue, not a shortcut.
- If you notice anything missing, act fast but calmly. Check your pockets/bag while you’re in the safe place. If a card/phone is missing, use your banking app/issuer to freeze or report it lost/stolen as soon as you can do so safely.
What can wait
- You do not need to work out if they “really meant it” or whether you misread the signal.
- You do not need to confront them, get proof, or take photos right now.
- You do not need to cancel every plan or travel route; first, get to a safe staffed place and stabilise.
- You do not need to give a full statement immediately if you’re shaken; you can report the key facts once you’re safe.
Important reassurance
Noticing “team” behaviour like signalling and watching valuables is a reasonable red flag. Acting early by securing items and moving to staff is not overreacting; it’s a low-drama way to reduce your risk and buy time.
Scope note
This is first-steps-only guidance for the next few minutes. If anything was stolen or you were threatened, follow-up steps (banking, reporting, support) may be needed once you’re safe and calm.
Important note
This is general information, not professional legal or safety advice. If you feel in immediate danger, prioritise getting to a safer place and contacting emergency services.
