What to do if…
you suspect you swallowed a caustic household product and your throat or mouth is burning

Short answer

This needs urgent advice. If you have any breathing trouble, severe symptoms, or you’re getting worse, call 999/112 now. Otherwise, call NHS 111 immediately and follow their instructions (they may send you to A&E).

Do not do these things

  • Do not make yourself vomit.
  • Do not try to “neutralise” it with vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, alcohol, or anything else.
  • Do not drink a large amount “to dilute it”.
  • Do not take activated charcoal unless told to by a clinician.
  • Do not brush your teeth, scrape your tongue, or gargle aggressively.
  • Do not put anything in your mouth if you’re drooling, vomiting, coughing/choking, or struggling to swallow.

What to do now

  1. Get the right help now.
    • If you have trouble breathing, choking/gasping, drooling, repeated vomiting, severe pain, drowsiness/confusion, you feel faint, or you’re rapidly worsening: call 999/112.
    • If you’re alert and breathing okay: call NHS 111 now and say you may have swallowed a caustic/corrosive household product and your mouth/throat is burning.
  2. Spit out anything still in your mouth.
    • Gently rinse your mouth with cool water and spit it out.
    • You can repeat a few times to clear taste/residue, but do not swallow the rinse water.
    • If rinsing triggers coughing, choking, or breathing trouble, stop and call 999.
  3. Sit upright and keep still.
Stay upright (not flat) while you wait for advice or transport.
  4. If any got on your skin/clothes, rinse and remove.
    • Carefully remove contaminated clothing/jewellery (avoid pulling it over your head if it’s wet with chemical).
    • Rinse affected skin with cool/lukewarm running water.
  5. Prepare what NHS 111/999/A&E will need.
    • Bring the product container/label (or take clear photos of front + ingredients + warnings).
    • Note what it was, when it happened, and roughly how much (sip vs mouthful).
  6. If you become very sleepy or collapse, escalate fast.
    • If someone is with you and you’re not fully awake but breathing, they should put you in the recovery position and call 999.
    • If you stop breathing, they should start CPR and call 999.

What can wait

  • You do not need to decide right now whether it was “enough to matter” — burning is enough to seek urgent advice.
  • You do not need to look up home treatments or try to “coat” your throat.
  • You do not need a perfect timeline — just the product, time, amount, and symptoms.

Important reassurance

It’s common to feel panicky and uncertain about what you swallowed. With caustic products, the safest approach is to get urgent guidance quickly and avoid actions (like vomiting or neutralising) that can cause more injury.

Scope note

This is first-steps-only guidance for the first hour or two. NHS 111/999 and hospital staff will advise next steps based on the exact product and your symptoms.

Important note

This is general information, not medical diagnosis or personal medical advice. If you suspect caustic ingestion or have mouth/throat burning, seek urgent medical help via 999/112 (severe symptoms) or NHS 111 (urgent advice).
