What to do if…
your bag containing your travel documents is delayed or missing after arrival
Short answer
Before you leave the airport, report the missing/delayed bag to the airline’s baggage desk and get a reference number (often a PIR). Then immediately start securing your identity documents (cancel/replace as needed) based on what’s missing.
Do not do these things
- Do not leave the airport without making a formal baggage report and getting the reference number in writing.
- Do not “wait and see” if your passport or immigration documents were in the bag—start the cancellation/replacement steps promptly.
- Do not post photos of your documents, boarding pass, or bag tags online (they can be used for fraud).
- Do not pay for “passport/visa help” from copycat websites or unofficial agents—use official channels.
What to do now
- Go straight to the airline/handling agent baggage desk in arrivals (before exiting).
File a missing/delayed baggage report and get the Property Irregularity Report (PIR) / file reference. Confirm:- your UK delivery address (hotel/friend/home)
- a phone/email contact they will use
- a clear description of the bag and that identity documents are inside
- Secure your proof and tracking details.
Keep: flight number/date, baggage tag number(s), PIR/reference, and the airline baggage contact details. Save a backup copy (e.g., email it to yourself). - If your UK passport is missing, cancel it as soon as you can.
Cancelling reduces the risk of identity misuse. If you later need to travel, you’ll apply for a replacement passport through the official route. - If you’re not a UK citizen and your passport is missing, contact your embassy/consulate in the UK.
Ask what they need for an emergency/replacement travel document and what they recommend if the passport might still be in airline possession. - If you have (or had) a BRP and it’s missing, report it even if it has expired.
Use the official Home Office reporting service. Keep the airline reference, and any police reference if theft is suspected. - If you have a UK residence card and it’s missing, report it using the Home Office instructions.
Do this promptly, and keep a record of what you sent (date/time and a copy of the email content). - Handle essentials and claims without overbuying.
If essentials are in the bag, buy only what you need for the next day or two and keep receipts. Ask the airline how to submit a written claim and what time limits and evidence they require (PIR/reference, receipts, list of essentials).
What can wait
- You do not need to decide today whether the bag is “lost forever.” Start the report and tracking first.
- You do not need a perfect inventory immediately—do it once you’re somewhere calm, using photos/receipts/bank transactions.
- You do not need to fight about compensation at the airport; secure the reference number and submit claims when you have the paperwork.
Important reassurance
It’s normal to feel panicky when documents are involved. Getting the airline reference number and starting cancellation/replacement quickly is enough to protect you while bag-tracing runs.
Scope note
These are first steps to reduce risk and keep you functioning today. Later steps (formal claims, complaints, longer replacement processes) can wait until you’re stable and have your reference numbers.
Important note
This is general information for immediate first actions, not legal advice. Processes vary by airline, airport, nationality, and immigration status. If you’re unsure which document route applies, prioritize the airline report plus official passport/immigration reporting channels and avoid unofficial “helpers.”
