What to do if…
your boarding pass or itinerary disappears from the airline app shortly before departure
Short answer
Don’t rely on the app: pull up your booking via your confirmation email or the airline website, then get a scannable boarding pass (digital or printed) saved offline. At many UK airports, you’ll need to scan a boarding pass to access the security area, so fix this early.
Do not do these things
- Don’t assume you can “sort it at the gate” — at many UK airports you often need a boarding pass to access security and get airside.
- Don’t keep refreshing in a panic while moving; stop for 60 seconds and switch to a fallback plan.
- Don’t cancel/rebook the flight just because the app looks empty.
- Don’t hand over your phone to strangers offering to “fix” it.
- Don’t sign out of the app unless you have your booking reference and can sign back in reliably.
- Don’t let your battery run down while you troubleshoot.
What to do now
-
Stabilise your basics (30 seconds).
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Plug into a charger/power bank. Turn brightness up (barcodes scan more reliably). -
Find your booking details outside the app.
Search your email/SMS for the airline (or travel agent) confirmation. Note: booking reference/PNR, passenger name (as booked), flight number, date, and departure airport. -
Use the airline website “Manage booking / My booking” as your primary fallback.
In a phone browser (or someone’s laptop), retrieve the booking using booking reference + surname. If a boarding pass is available there, download it (PDF if offered) and save it offline. -
Make an offline backup immediately.
If a barcode/QR pass appears (in app or browser), take a screenshot and save it. If available, add it to Apple Wallet / Google Wallet too. Do this even if you expect the app to come back. -
If you still can’t retrieve a boarding pass, go to the airline’s kiosk or check-in desk now.
At many UK airports, access to security can depend on scanning a boarding pass at the entry gates. Bring your passport/ID and booking reference and ask for a boarding pass reissue/reprint (and any required document check). -
If you’re already at the airport and time is tight: prioritise the shortest path to a human.
Find your airline’s check-in/bag drop/customer service area. If there’s a queue marshal, say: “My boarding pass disappeared; I need a scannable boarding pass (digital or printed) to get through security.” -
If the airline says you must use the app (some carriers do): secure power and a second route anyway.
Get charging, use airport Wi-Fi if needed, and keep the airline website booking page open as backup. If your phone is failing, ask staff what alternative they can issue for this airport and flight. -
If you’re flying internationally, expect a document check possibility.
Sometimes boarding passes won’t display until passport/visa details are verified. If the app/website won’t issue a pass, go straight to staff rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
What can wait
- You do not need to figure out why the app glitched right now.
- You do not need to change seats, add bags, or manage upgrades in this moment.
- You do not need to keep troubleshooting once you’ve switched to a kiosk/desk plan — the goal is simply a usable, scannable pass.
Important reassurance
This is a common, fixable problem (logouts, syncing, connectivity, document checks). Airports and airlines are set up to reissue boarding passes. The key is switching quickly to a fallback channel and getting a pass you can scan.
Scope note
These are first steps to get you a boarding pass and keep you moving. Later follow-ups (app reinstall, account recovery, refund/fee questions) can wait until you’re through the airport pinch point.
Important note
This is general information, not legal or professional advice. Airline and airport procedures vary by carrier, destination, and terminal. If departure is soon, go in person to your airline kiosk/desk and follow staff instructions.
