What to do if…
your boarding pass will not scan at the gate and boarding is in progress

Short answer

Step out of the queue immediately and get a gate agent’s attention: they can often reissue/refresh your boarding pass or clear a system hold, but only while the flight is still open for boarding.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t keep trying to scan repeatedly while blocking the lane; it wastes the minutes you need.
  • Don’t walk away from the gate “to sort it out” without telling a gate agent first (you can miss final boarding).
  • Don’t hand your phone or passport to strangers “to help” or leave bags unattended.
  • Don’t assume a screenshot or a PDF/scan of your boarding pass will be accepted or scannable—some airlines/airports won’t scan certain formats. If in doubt, use the airline app pass, a Wallet pass, or get a fresh paper print.
  • Don’t assume it’s “your fault” (often it’s a document-check or a sync issue on the airline system).

What to do now

  1. Move to the side of the boarding area (still within sight of the desk).
Take a breath, get your phone/printed pass and your passport/ID in your hand so you look “ready to be fixed,” not “still searching.”
  2. Get a gate agent’s attention quickly and clearly.
Say: “My boarding pass won’t scan; boarding is in progress. Can you reissue it or check if there’s a hold?”
If there are two staff, approach the one not actively scanning other passengers.
  3. Check the simplest scan blockers while you wait (30–60 seconds, not 5 minutes).
    • Turn screen brightness to max and wipe smudges from your screen.
    • Turn off “dark mode”/blue light filters temporarily.
    • If you have the pass in multiple places (airline app + Apple/Google Wallet + email), open the airline app or Wallet version first if possible.
    • If you’re using a printed pass, flatten it and make sure the barcode/QR isn’t creased or torn.
  4. If a document check is needed, be ready to show the right thing immediately.
For international flights this is often your passport (and sometimes visa/residence proof). Hand it directly to the gate agent when asked.
  5. Ask for the fastest usable replacement boarding pass.
    • If your phone is the problem (cracked screen, low battery, app stuck), ask for a paper boarding pass or for them to reissue your mobile pass from their system.
    • If the gate can’t do it, ask: “Where is the nearest airline desk/kiosk for reprint, and will boarding still be open if I go now?”
  6. If you’re travelling with others, prevent accidental separation.
Tell your group: “Stay just over there. Don’t go far.”
Keep all passports/IDs with their owners and keep your essentials (phone, bank card, any required meds) with you.
  7. If the agent says you’re “not cleared” / “unable to board,” ask the key question.
“Is this a document verification issue, or do you need to reissue the boarding pass?”
This helps staff choose the right fix without you guessing.

What can wait

  • You do not need to decide right now who is to blame, whether to complain, or what compensation you might be entitled to.
  • You do not need to troubleshoot your phone deeply (reinstalling apps, password resets) unless a gate agent explicitly tells you it’s required.
  • You do not need to argue about policies in the boarding lane; the priority is getting a pass that scans before the door closes.

Important reassurance

This is a common, fixable airport glitch or “hold” (document checks, seat changes, or the boarding system not syncing). The most effective move is to step aside and get a gate agent to reissue or clear it while boarding is still open.

Scope note

These are first steps for the moment your pass won’t scan while boarding is underway. After you’re either onboard or the flight has closed, the next steps become airline-specific (rebooking, standby, missed flight procedures).

Important note

This is general information, not legal advice or a guarantee of boarding. Airlines and airports can have different scanning systems and document-check requirements, and gate staff decisions depend on safety, security, and whether boarding has closed.
