What to do if…
your bonnet or hood will not latch properly and you notice before driving

Short answer

Don’t drive. If the bonnet won’t securely latch shut, treat it as unsafe and get help where you are (or move it only a few metres at walking pace to a safer spot if you must).

Do not do these things

  • Don’t drive relying on the safety catch alone.
  • Don’t strap/rope/bungee the bonnet down for a journey (it can shift, loosen, or hide the real problem).
  • Don’t keep slamming the bonnet harder and harder (you can bend panels or worsen misalignment).
  • Don’t put fingers near the latch mechanism while someone is closing the bonnet.
  • Don’t “test it” by driving at speed.

What to do now

  1. Make the situation safe where you are. If you’re somewhere safe (driveway, car park), stay parked. If you’re stopped somewhere risky (near fast traffic), put hazards on and only if it’s clearly safe move the car a very short distance at walking pace to a safer stopping place.
  2. Try one careful re-latch attempt (only once or twice).
    • Fully open the bonnet.
    • Remove obvious loose obstructions (rag, leaves, ice, a tool) around the latch/striker area.
    • Close the bonnet only using the method your vehicle’s handbook describes. If it doesn’t latch with normal closing pressure, don’t force it.
  3. Confirm it’s actually secured. With the bonnet “closed”, gently try lifting the front edge (and each side if accessible). If it lifts at all, treat it as not secured.
  4. Check you’re not on the secondary safety catch only. If the bonnet sits slightly raised, looks uneven, or opens with the exterior safety catch, assume the primary latch hasn’t engaged properly.
  5. Stop troubleshooting if it still won’t latch. Common causes include misalignment, a worn latch/striker, a sticking mechanism, or release-cable issues—often needing proper adjustment/tools.
  6. Get breakdown or local repair help where the car is.
    • If you have breakdown cover, request assistance and describe it as “bonnet not securing / risk of opening.”
    • If you’re away from home, ask for recovery to a garage rather than trying to drive it there.
  7. If this started right after recent work under the bonnet (battery, washer fluid, servicing), tell the mechanic/assistance provider. It can help them spot a simple cause quickly.

What can wait

  • You don’t need to diagnose the exact part (cable vs latch vs striker) right now.
  • You don’t need to decide about complaints, refunds, or insurance while you’re still dealing with the immediate safety issue.
  • You don’t need to attempt roadside adjustments beyond removing obvious debris and trying a normal close.

Important reassurance

This is a common, fixable problem—and noticing it before driving is the best time to catch it. Treating it as a “do not drive until secure” issue is a sensible safety call.

Scope note

These are first steps to prevent the bonnet opening while moving and blocking your view. Repairs and adjustments should be done by someone competent with the correct tools.

Important note

This guide is general information for immediate risk reduction, not legal or mechanical certification. If you feel unsafe where you are, prioritise getting to (or staying in) a safer place and contacting appropriate help.
