What to do if…
your calls start going straight to voicemail and texts arrive late or not at all
Short answer
Treat it like a connectivity fault: do a quick reconnect (flight mode + restart), then check whether there’s a local network outage before changing anything drastic.
Do not do these things
- Don’t keep re-dialling repeatedly — it wastes battery/time during a fault and may add to congestion when networks are struggling.
- Don’t factory reset your phone or erase it in panic.
- Don’t assume it’s “definitely your phone” until you’ve checked for a local outage affecting others.
- Don’t share one-time passcodes (banking/login codes) with anyone “helping” — delayed texts can make scams more confusing.
- Don’t immediately replace your handset if you haven’t tried a SIM/eSIM refresh and provider checks.
What to do now
- If you need to make an urgent call right now: try Wi-Fi Calling (if you already have it enabled), use a landline, or ask someone nearby to call. For emergencies, use 999/112.
- Check for settings that silently divert calls:
- Turn off Do Not Disturb / Focus / Sleep modes.
- Check Call Forwarding is off, and you haven’t accidentally blocked key contacts.
- If you use a feature that silences unknown callers, temporarily turn it off to test.
- Force the phone to re-register on the network (fast reset):
- Turn Flight mode on, wait about 5–10 seconds, then off.
- Fully power off, wait ~20 seconds, then power back on.
- Move and retest once: try calling/texting in a different location (even just outside) to rule out a very local coverage/building issue.
- Check whether it’s a wider outage:
- Use your provider’s service status/outage checker (website/app).
- If you’re unsure what “should” work where you are, use Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile coverage checker for that postcode.
- Refresh SIM/eSIM (only when you’re in a safe, calm place):
- If you have a physical SIM: power off, remove and reinsert it, then power on.
- If you use eSIM: toggle the eSIM line off/on (or mobile data off/on) to prompt a fresh connection.
- Do one “deeper” fix if the basics didn’t work:
- Install any pending phone software updates.
- As a last resort, reset network settings (this can remove saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN/APN settings).
- Contact your network provider with specifics: tell them calls go to voicemail + delayed/missing SMS, your postcode, and times it happened. Ask them to check for:
- known local faults/outages,
- account/service blocks,
- and whether your line/SIM needs a refresh / reprovisioning or a replacement SIM.
What can wait
- You don’t need to decide today whether to change networks, upgrade your phone, or buy signal-boosting equipment.
- You don’t need to chase advanced tweaks (APN edits, manual bands) unless your provider specifically tells you to.
- You don’t need to make a formal complaint until you’ve logged a few clear examples (dates/times/locations).
Important reassurance
This pattern (voicemail + delayed texts) is common when a phone briefly “drops” its network registration, when there’s congestion/outage, or when a setting like Focus/forwarding/silencing is on. It’s usually fixable without replacing your phone.
Scope note
These are first steps to restore basic calling/SMS and avoid panic mistakes. If it keeps happening over multiple days or in multiple places, the next layer is provider-led investigation (SIM replacement, line checks, handset diagnostics).
Important note
This is general information, not professional or legal advice. If you’re unable to reliably call for help and you’re at risk, use alternative routes immediately (Wi-Fi Calling/landline/another person) and contact your provider as soon as practical.
