What to do if…
your charging cable won’t release from the car or the charger and you need to leave
Short answer
Stop the charging session first, then unlock the car and try a careful “reseat the connector + unlock cycle” release. If it still won’t release, use your vehicle’s manual/emergency release method (only when it’s not charging) and call the chargepoint operator helpline shown on the unit.
Do not do these things
- Don’t yank, twist hard, or lever the connector with tools — it can damage the port/connector and make it harder to release.
- Don’t use any manual/emergency release while the vehicle is actively charging.
- Don’t drive off with the cable still attached.
- Don’t switch off power at the chargepoint/electrics unless you’re the owner/operator and you know it’s safe to do so.
- Don’t leave the cable under tension (pulled tight) while you “try one more time” — reduce tension first.
What to do now
- Make it safe to pause for 60 seconds. Put the car in Park, apply the parking brake, and slow down so you don’t damage anything in a rush.
- End the charging session cleanly.
- Use the charger/app/RFID card to stop the session (or the station’s stop button, if it has one).
- If your car has an in-car “stop charging” control, use that too.
- Unlock the car (properly).
- Unlock with the key fob and keep the vehicle unlocked for a moment.
- If it doesn’t release, try pressing unlock several times and/or a few lock → unlock cycles (some vehicles only release the port lock after a fresh unlock).
- Remove tension and reseat the plug.
- Hold the connector straight, push it gently fully in (so the latch can reset), then try removing it straight out.
- Make sure the cable isn’t pulled tight, kinked, or bearing weight.
- Try a structured “unlock cycle” (often recommended by networks).
- With charging stopped and the car in Park: press unlock 5 times, then (if needed) toggle lock/unlock 3 times, checking after each set whether it releases.
- If it’s stuck in the chargepoint (your detachable cable):
- Call the service/helpline number on the post. Operators may be able to end/reset the session or advise a safe reboot procedure.
- If there’s a staffed site (car park, supermarket, depot), ask staff to contact facilities/security.
- If it’s stuck in the car: use the vehicle’s manual/emergency release.
- Check the owner’s manual (often “charge port” → “manual release”).
- Only do this once you’re sure charging has stopped.
- If you truly must leave and it still won’t release:
- Call the helpline and explain you’re blocked and need to depart.
- If you’re on private land, notify site staff/security so the bay isn’t treated as abandoned.
- Arrange an alternative way to continue your journey (taxi/public transport) rather than forcing the connector.
What can wait
- You don’t need to diagnose whether it’s the car, the cable, or the charger right now.
- You don’t need to make decisions about repairs, warranties, or blame on the spot.
- You don’t need to keep retrying beyond a few careful cycles — once you’ve done the safe steps above, switch to calling the operator/manual release.
Important reassurance
This is a common EV charging glitch and is often just a “session didn’t end” or “port lock didn’t cycle” issue. Going slowly and resetting the latch cleanly is usually what frees it — force is what most often makes it worse.
Scope note
These are first steps to get you safely unplugged and moving. If the issue repeats, you may need vehicle-specific help from your manufacturer and/or the charging network.
Important note
This guide is general information for urgent situations, not mechanical or electrical advice. If anything looks damaged, smells hot, is sparking, or you feel unsafe, step back and get professional help (and use emergency services only if there is immediate danger).
