What to do if…
your dishwasher starts leaking water onto the kitchen floor mid-cycle

Short answer

Stop the cycle, cut power to the dishwasher safely, and shut off the water supply to it (or your stopcock if you can’t isolate the appliance).

Do not do these things

  • Don’t stand in water and touch plugs, sockets, switches, extension leads, or the consumer unit.
  • Don’t keep the cycle running “to finish” or keep opening/closing the door repeatedly.
  • Don’t pull the dishwasher out while it’s still powered or still connected to water.
  • Don’t use towels right up against electrical points (sockets, power strips, extension reels).
  • Don’t restart the dishwasher “to test it” until it’s dry and the cause is dealt with.

What to do now

  1. Make a safer pause: Step onto a dry area. Keep children/pets out of the kitchen and away from the wet floor.
  2. Stop the dishwasher: Press Cancel/Drain if available. If it won’t respond, don’t keep pressing—move on to power and water.
  3. Cut power safely (only from a dry position):
    • If the dishwasher is on a switched socket or fused spur you can reach without standing in water, switch it off.
    • If you can’t reach that safely, switch off the dishwasher circuit at the consumer unit only if the consumer unit area is dry and clearly not affected by water. If there’s any chance it’s wet/affected, do not touch it—keep away from electrics and get qualified help.
  4. Shut off the water (prefer the appliance valve first):
    • Under the sink, close the dishwasher isolation valve (often a small lever/slot valve on the dishwasher supply line). Keep hands dry and avoid any under-sink electrics.
    • If you can’t find it quickly or it won’t turn, shut off the mains stopcock/stop tap only if you can access it safely.
  5. Contain the water (prevent spread/damage): Use towels as “dams” around the edge of the puddle and mop water away from sockets, appliance bases, and under-cabinet gaps. If water is heading under units, roll towels and press them into the kickboard edges to slow it.
  6. Document quickly (useful for landlord/insurance): Take a few photos/videos of the water spread and the point you turned off (switch/valve), then stop handling the appliance.
  7. If you’re renting: Report it as an urgent repair to your landlord/letting agent: “Dishwasher leaking mid-cycle; power and water isolated; water on kitchen floor.” If your building has a caretaker/managing agent, notify them too.
  8. If water reached electrics, or you smell burning/hear crackling/sparking: Keep people out of the area. Call 999 if there’s immediate danger (fire/electrical emergency). Otherwise, arrange a qualified electrician/appliance engineer before restoring power or using affected sockets/appliances.

What can wait

  • You don’t need to diagnose the exact part (seal, hose, pump) right now.
  • You don’t need to move the dishwasher today if doing so requires pulling it through water or around electrics.
  • You don’t need to decide repair vs replacement yet—first stop the leak and reduce electrical risk.

Important reassurance

A mid-cycle leak is stressful but common. The biggest risk-reducers are simple: water off, power off (safely), and stop the spread.

Scope note

This is first steps only to stabilise the situation and reduce harm. Follow-up drying, inspection and repair may need a qualified professional—especially if water contacted wiring or sockets.

Important note

This is general information, not professional advice. If you’re unsure about electrical safety, avoid contact with electrics and get qualified help.
