What to do if…
your front door will not latch or lock and you cannot secure your home

Short answer

Treat this as a time-sensitive security problem: get to a safer pause, then arrange urgent repair (landlord/emergency repairs or a reputable locksmith) and make a quick record of the fault.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t leave the property empty “just for a short time” if the door won’t secure.
  • Don’t block your escape route or trap yourself in (for example, by barricading in a way you can’t remove quickly).
  • Don’t agree to drilling/replacement as the first option without a clear explanation and a clear total price (including call-out and parts).
  • Don’t post publicly that your home is unsecured or that you’re alone/away.
  • Don’t assume it’s automatically your cost if you rent—report it first; responsibility can depend on the tenancy and the cause.

What to do now

  1. Get to a safer pause. If you feel at risk, move somewhere safer (a trusted neighbour, or a room away from the door) while you arrange help. If someone is trying to get in right now, call 999. If you’re worried but it’s not an emergency, you can contact police on 101.
  2. Secure other entry points. Lock all other external doors, accessible windows, and any internal door that separates you from the entry (for example, a hallway door) if you have one.
  3. Add a temporary inside-only measure that you can remove instantly. For example, a simple door wedge or a heavy item braced against the door only if it can be moved immediately and doesn’t block how you’d get out in a fire.
  4. Document the fault in 60 seconds. Take a short video showing the door failing to latch/lock, the handle/lock movement, and any visible gap/misalignment. Note the date/time.
  5. If you rent: report it as urgent in writing now. Use your landlord/agent’s emergency repairs route if provided. Send a message/email (and keep a copy) stating you cannot secure the property and need same-day/urgent attendance.
  6. If you need a locksmith: reduce scam risk before anyone attends. Ask for the business name, a realistic total price range (call-out/labour/parts), and what they will try before drilling. Prefer a vetted locksmith (for example, a Master Locksmiths Association approved locksmith).
  7. If you can’t secure the home tonight, decide where you’ll be safest. Options include staying in with a trusted person, staying with a neighbour/friend, or using any emergency home assistance you already have. Priority: don’t leave the home empty and unsecured.

What can wait

  • You do not need to decide tonight on upgrades (new door, smart lock, alarms).
  • You do not need to settle who pays tonight—focus on getting secure and keeping your evidence trail.
  • You can deal with longer-term fixes (alignment adjustment, replacement parts, spare keys) after the door is secured.

Important reassurance

A failed latch/lock can feel instantly alarming because it removes your “safe boundary.” This is a common type of fault (often misalignment or a worn mechanism), and taking calm, concrete steps to secure the situation usually prevents both break-in risk and expensive rushed decisions.

Scope note

These are first steps only. Follow-up choices (cost responsibility, replacement vs repair, complaints/insurance) depend on your housing situation and can be handled once you’re secure.
