What to do if…
your mobility scooter stops working while you are out and walking the distance isn’t realistic
Short answer
Get to the safest nearby stopping place you can, then call for recovery/transport (your breakdown/insurance provider, Motability Assist if you’re on the Motability Scheme, or a trusted contact) rather than trying to push it a long distance.
Do not do these things
- Don’t keep trying to “force it” to move if it’s cutting out (you can worsen a fault or lose control in a busy area).
- Don’t push the scooter in the road, across junctions, or on narrow pavements where you could be forced into traffic.
- Don’t accept a lift with a stranger unless you can verify who they are and where you’re going.
- Don’t leave the scooter unattended “just for a moment” in a public place if you rely on it to get home.
- Don’t feel you must continue your journey immediately if you’re overheating, chilled, dizzy, or shaken.
What to do now
- Pause and make the situation safer. Stop moving, put hazards/visibility on if you have them, and position yourself where you won’t be bumped (shop doorway, wide pavement, bus stop shelter, inside a café or station if accessible).
- Do a 20-second “simple causes” check (only if it’s safe and you already know how). Check the power switch, key, battery indicator, and whether any obvious “drive/freewheel” setting has been changed. Some models won’t drive if a freewheel/neutral setting is engaged. If anything is unclear, stop and move on.
- If you’re on the Motability Scheme (scooter/wheelchair): call Motability Assist. Tell them: your exact location, whether you’re indoors/outdoors, and that you need help getting you (and the product) home.
- If you’re not on Motability: call the help you already have first. This might be your scooter insurer/breakdown cover, the retailer/manufacturer’s support line, or the person who maintains it. If you don’t have cover, call a trusted contact who can bring a vehicle large enough, or help arrange transport.
- Ask a nearby business for practical help while you wait. “Could I wait just inside?” and “Could you help me confirm the address/postcode I’m at?” If your phone is low, ask to charge it.
- Arrange an accessible way home that can take the scooter. Options often include:
- A wheelchair-accessible taxi/private hire (tell them it’s a mobility scooter and its approximate size/weight).
- A friend/family member with a suitable vehicle/ramps.
- If you already use local accessible transport, call the number you normally use.
- If you’re in immediate danger or you feel medically unwell: call 999. If it’s not urgent but you need police help/advice because you can’t get to a safe place or you feel at risk, you can call 101.
- Once you’re safe at home (or in a safe indoor place), stop troubleshooting. Turn the scooter off and contact your dealer/maintainer for repair advice.
What can wait
- You don’t have to diagnose the fault right now.
- You don’t have to decide about repairs, complaints, or replacement today.
- You don’t have to argue about liability or costs while you’re still stranded.
- You don’t need to keep appointments on schedule if doing so could leave you stuck again—rescheduling can come later.
Important reassurance
This is a genuinely stressful situation, especially if walking isn’t realistic. It’s reasonable to prioritise staying safe, warm/cool, and connected, and to treat “getting home safely” as the only job right now.
Scope note
These are first steps for the moment you realise you can’t continue. Once you’re safe, you can deal with repairs, servicing, and making sure you have a reliable “what if it happens again” plan.
Important note
This guide is general information, not medical or legal advice. If you feel unwell, unsafe, or at risk where you are, treat that as urgent and seek immediate help.
