What to do if…
your phone storage fills up and it stops saving photos, videos, or messages

Short answer

Stop trying repeatedly, free a small amount of device space immediately (even 1–2 GB), then back up/copy the most recent photos and videos before you do any big cleanup.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t factory reset, “erase all content”, or reinstall the OS as a first step.
  • Don’t delete lots of photos/videos in a panic before you’ve backed up or copied the recent ones you can’t replace.
  • Don’t install random “cleaner” apps or grant broad access to your files/photos in desperation.
  • Don’t assume “iCloud/Google storage” being full is the same thing as phone storage (they can be separate).
  • Don’t keep filming/photographing “just in case it saved” — it can create duplicates/partial files and make it harder to tell what actually saved.

What to do now

  1. Create a safe pause and preserve the moment.
If something important is happening right now, use an alternative immediately (another phone, a digital camera, or ask someone to send you copies). If it’s messages you need, take screenshots of key threads while you still can.

  2. Check what’s actually full: device storage vs cloud/account storage.

    • iPhone (iOS): Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
    • Android: Settings → Storage (wording varies).
You’re looking for very low/zero free space on the device.
  3. Free space fast using the least risky items first (aim for 1–2 GB).
Do one of these quick wins, then re-try saving a photo/message:

    • Delete big downloads you can re-get: Files / Downloads folder.
    • Remove offline media: streaming app downloads, podcast downloads, offline maps.
    • Uninstall one large app you don’t need today (games are often huge).
    • Empty “Recently Deleted”/Trash (Photos and any file-bin/trash) so space is actually reclaimed.
  4. Back up/copy the most recent photos/videos before deeper cleanup.
Pick one route you can do now:

    • Cloud sync (if you already use it): connect to reliable Wi-Fi + power and let Photos upload/sync.
    • Copy to a computer: connect by cable, import/copy recent photos/videos, then confirm you can open them on the computer.
    • Copy to external storage (if you already have it): e.g., USB-C stick/adapter-supported drive.
The goal is to protect the newest items first.
  5. Turn on built-in storage-saving options (only after you’ve freed space).

    • iPhone:
      • Settings → Photos → enable Optimise iPhone Storage (if you use iCloud Photos).
      • Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Offload Unused Apps (removes the app but keeps its documents/data on the phone; you can reinstall later).
    • Android:
      • Use the system storage manager prompts, but be cautious with anything labelled “Clear storage/data” (it can erase the app’s data). If you clear anything, “cache” is usually the safer option.
  6. Fix message saving issues caused by full storage.

    • If messages won’t download media or save attachments, freeing device space often resolves it.
    • Then remove the biggest message attachments where your phone offers that option (for example, large videos).
    • For WhatsApp/Signal/other apps, use their in-app storage tools (often “Storage and data” → manage storage).
  7. If you installed a paid “cleaner” app in a panic, stop potential repeat charges now (UK-specific).

    • Check your bank/credit card app for a new subscription/recurring card payment.
    • If you can’t cancel easily with the merchant, you can ask your card issuer to stop a recurring card payment/continuous payment authority.
  8. If the phone still isn’t saving after you freed space, protect data and stop experimenting.
Put it on charge + Wi-Fi, attempt a full backup (iCloud/Google backup or computer backup), and avoid app installs/updates until you’ve secured your data.

What can wait

  • You do not need to reorganise your entire photo library right now.
  • You do not need to decide whether to pay for extra cloud storage today (focus on stopping immediate loss first).
  • You do not need to chase “perfect” cleanup; once you’ve got breathing room and a backup, you can tidy later.
  • You do not need to troubleshoot hardware faults until you’ve backed up what you can.

Important reassurance

This is a very common failure mode: when storage gets critically low, phones can stop saving reliably, and apps can misbehave. Freeing a small amount of space and then backing up usually stabilises things quickly.

Scope note

These are first steps to stop immediate digital loss and stabilise your phone. If you keep seeing storage errors after freeing space and backing up, the next stage is deeper troubleshooting (or repair) — but only once your data is safe.

Important note

This is general information, not professional IT or legal advice. Phone menus and features vary by model, Android version, and account settings. If the phone is work-issued in the UK, follow your employer’s IT process before making major changes like wiping or repair.
