What to do if…
your vaccination certificate or test-result app will not load when you need to show proof

Short answer

Step out of the line if you can, get to a calmer spot, and switch immediately to an offline backup (screenshot/PDF/printed copy) or ask staff what alternative proof they will accept.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t panic-delete and reinstall the app while you’re in the queue (you can lock yourself out, lose offline data, or trigger security checks).
  • Don’t assume “no app = no travel” without asking the airline/rail operator/border staff what alternatives they accept.
  • Don’t hand your unlocked phone to strangers “to help” (screen-share only, or keep the device in your hand).
  • Don’t keep hammering “refresh” until your phone overheats or your battery drops dangerously low—switch to a backup route quickly.
  • Don’t rely on mobile signal or airport Wi-Fi as your only plan if you’re about to reach the desk/gate.

What to do now

  1. Create a 2–3 minute safety buffer. Step aside, breathe, plug into a charger/power bank if you have one, and turn on low-power mode. This prevents the worst-case “dead phone at the desk” problem.
  2. Try the fastest “no-login” fixes first (30–60 seconds):
    • Toggle airplane mode on/off.
    • Switch Wi-Fi off (or on) and try once.
    • Force-close the app and reopen it once.
    • Restart the phone if it’s clearly frozen (do this only if you’re confident you know the unlock/passcode and any SIM PIN).
  3. Immediately switch to an offline fallback you already have:
    • Check your photo gallery for a screenshot of the QR code/certificate.
    • Check your email/downloads for a PDF version.
    • Check Apple Wallet / Google Wallet (if you previously saved a pass).
    • If you have a printed copy, get it ready now.
  4. Ask the right question at the desk/gate (keep it simple). Say:
“My proof app won’t load. What alternative proof can you accept right now — printed certificate, PDF, screenshot, or provider record?”
  5. If you’re being asked for an NHS COVID Pass, make it a concrete clarification (not an argument).
    • GOV.UK guidance says the NHS COVID Pass service has closed and it’s no longer required for international travel.
    • Still, you may need other destination-specific health proof (for example, a different vaccination record or a test result), and frontline checks can be inconsistent.
    • Ask: “Which exact document do you need for this trip, and will you accept a printed copy, PDF, screenshot, or provider record?”
  6. If the app needs an update, avoid risky changes in the queue. Only update if:
    • You have stable internet, and
    • You know your login details, and
    • You have enough battery to survive a failed update.
Otherwise, focus on an alternate proof route first.
  7. If you’re stuck and time is tight, escalate to the operator’s support channel on-site. Many airports/stations have airline/service desks or customer service who can note your booking, re-check documents, or advise accepted alternatives.

What can wait

  • You do not need to troubleshoot perfectly right now or “fix the app forever.”
  • You do not need to reorganise all your travel documents or change passwords in the middle of a queue.
  • You do not need to argue about policies—your only goal is to find an accepted alternative proof quickly.

Important reassurance

This happens to lots of people at the worst possible moment: poor signal, a forced update, a login loop, or a dead battery. The situation is usually recoverable once you switch from “make the app work” to “show any accepted proof”.

Scope note

This is first-steps-only guidance to get you through check-in, boarding, or entry. After you’re safe and unhurried, you can rebuild a reliable offline backup set for future trips.

Important note

This is general information, not legal or medical advice. Requirements can vary by destination, operator, and your specific circumstances. When in doubt, ask the airline/rail operator/border staff what alternatives they accept and follow their instructions.
