What to do if…
a messaging app says it cannot restore your chat backup and messages are missing

Short answer

Stop “trial-and-error” restores that could overwrite a good backup. First confirm you’re on the same phone number and the same Apple ID/Google account used for the backup, and preserve any old device data before making changes.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t repeatedly uninstall/reinstall or “start fresh” while you’re unsure whether a backup exists (you can create new empty backups or complicate recovery).
  • Don’t delete backup files/folders, clear storage blindly, or run “cleaner” apps.
  • Don’t sign into multiple accounts/devices at the same time while troubleshooting (easy to restore the wrong profile).
  • Don’t assume the provider can retrieve your chats if the service is end-to-end encrypted (often they can’t).
  • Don’t hand over passwords, verification codes, recovery keys, or remote access to third-party “recovery” services.

What to do now

  1. Stabilize and preserve.
If you still have the old phone with your messages, don’t reset it. If you’re worried about syncing/overwriting, consider leaving it offline (airplane mode). Take screenshots of: backup settings, the restore error, backup dates/sizes, and your account identifiers.

  2. Verify you’re restoring with the same identity.

    • Confirm the app is registered to the same phone number.
    • Confirm you’re signed into the same Apple ID (iCloud) or same Google account used before.
Account mismatches are a very common reason restores fail or look “empty.”
  3. Check whether a backup exists in the cloud/device backup system.

    • iPhone/iPad: Settings → your name (Apple ID) → iCloud → iCloud Backup (and/or iCloud storage/backups screens).
    • Android: Settings → Google → Backup (or “Manage backup”), and confirm the correct Google account is selected.
If nothing exists there, the app may not have a restorable backup.
  4. Remove the common “restore blockers” before trying again.

    • Ensure enough free phone storage to unpack the backup.
    • Use a stable connection (try a different Wi-Fi, or cellular).
    • Update the app and your phone OS.
    • Keep the phone plugged in during restore.
  5. Prefer “transfer from old phone” if available.
Many encrypted apps support device-to-device transfer, which can be more reliable than cloud restore. If your old phone still has the chats, this is often your best chance.

  6. If you retry a restore, do one controlled attempt.
Close other apps, keep the phone awake/charging, follow the app’s official restore flow exactly, and write down the exact error text and time if it fails again.

  7. Contact official support with a clear packet of evidence.
Provide: device model, OS version, app version, backup date/size shown, whether you changed phones or numbers, and screenshots of the restore failure. Ask how to avoid overwriting any existing backup while you troubleshoot.

  8. Optional: if you suspect fraud or a scam, use U.S. reporting/complaint routes.
If a paid “recovery” service, fake support line, or suspicious party took money or access and you believe it’s fraudulent, report it through the FTC’s reporting site. For general “where do I complain about a company/service?” guidance, USA.gov is a good starting point. These steps won’t restore messages, but they can help stop further harm.

What can wait

  • You don’t need to decide today whether you’ll switch apps, change phones again, or pay for add-on storage.
  • You don’t need to do advanced “cleanup” steps (clearing app data, deleting folders, resetting the phone) until you’ve confirmed whether a backup exists and which account it belongs to.
  • You can delay deep technical steps until after you’ve documented what you have and contacted official support.

Important reassurance

This kind of loss is usually caused by an account mismatch, missing backup, insufficient device storage, or encryption-related limits. Going slowly—especially keeping any old device intact—gives you the best chance of getting something back.

Scope note

These are first steps to prevent accidental overwrites and to get you to the right support channels. The exact recovery path depends on the specific app, device, and backup method.

Important note

This is general information, not legal advice or a guarantee of recovery. Some encrypted services can’t recover message content without your backup file or recovery key, even if you can prove account ownership.
