What to do if…
a public charger is working but will not accept your payment method and you are low on charge
Short answer
Stop burning your remaining range and switch quickly: document the charger ID/error, try the fastest alternate payment/start method, and if it won’t start soon, move to a closer backup charger while you still can.
Do not do these things
- Don’t keep retrying payments over and over (it can trigger fraud locks, app lockouts, or multiple pending holds).
- Don’t run high-power loads (HVAC/defrost/entertainment) while you troubleshoot.
- Don’t assume a working screen means the station can actually authenticate payment and start a paid session.
- Don’t accept “support” from random people asking for full card details, one-time passcodes, or login codes.
- Don’t wait until 0% to make a plan — you lose safe options fast.
What to do now
-
Make the situation safer and slow down battery drain (1 minute).
Park safely. Reduce load: turn down HVAC/defrost, switch to Eco/Range mode, and keep doors closed if it’s very hot/cold. -
Record the key details support will ask for.
Take a photo of the station name/network, charger ID, stall number, address, and the error message. Note the time. -
Try the fastest alternate start method at the same site.
- If the card reader fails: try another card or a mobile wallet (Apple Pay/Google Pay) if the station supports it.
- If the app fails: look for a “Guest” / credit-card option on the dispenser (many networks support ad-hoc pay without membership).
- If one stall/connector fails: try another stall/connector at the same location.
-
Call the network’s support line and ask what they can do right now.
Give them the charger ID/stall number. They may be able to confirm whether the stall is in fault status, advise a working stall at that site, or start a session remotely (varies by network and situation). -
If the app won’t load or your phone is dying, use “least-data” options.
- Plug your phone into the car for power.
- Prefer a phone call to support over reinstalling apps or changing payment profiles on the spot.
-
Set a hard limit, then switch to Plan B.
If you can’t get charging started within about 5–10 minutes, use your remaining range to drive to a closer backup charger (even a slower Level 2 can be enough to get you unstuck). -
If you’re at risk of becoming stranded, line up roadside help early.
- Call your roadside provider (AAA, your insurer, automaker roadside, etc.) and state: “EV low battery and unable to start charging session due to payment/auth issue.”
- Ask whether they can tow to the nearest charging station (a common approach for EVs with depleted batteries).
-
If you’re stopped somewhere unsafe, treat it as a safety emergency.
- Move to a safer area if you can do so safely.
- If you feel in immediate danger (traffic hazard, threat, medical emergency), call 911.
What can wait
- You do not need to fully diagnose whether it’s your bank, the app, roaming, or the station backend.
- You do not need to dispute pending charges or holds right now.
- You do not need to file complaints or write reviews until you’re safely charging or recovered.
Important reassurance
You’re not doing anything “wrong” — stations can be powered on yet unable to authenticate payment or start a session. The safest move is usually to pivot quickly to another start method or another nearby charger while you still have buffer.
Scope note
This is first-step guidance to keep you safe, preserve range, and get charging (or recovery) started. Once you’re stable, you can follow up with the charging network and your card issuer about declines or holds.
Important note
This is general information, not legal advice. If you are in immediate danger, prioritize safety and emergency services.
