What to do if…
a rideshare profile photo or license plate does not match the car that arrives

Short answer

Don’t get in. Move somewhere safer, cancel the trip in the app, and request a new ride. If you feel threatened or followed, call 911.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t get in to “sort it out” or because the driver insists it’s fine.
  • Don’t accept an off-app ride (cash, Venmo/Zelle, “cancel and I’ll take you anyway”).
  • Don’t share verification codes, PINs, or account info with anyone at the curb.
  • Don’t step close to the window to debate details; keep distance and a clear exit path.
  • Don’t let urgency (rain, late night, surge prices) override a mismatch.

What to do now

  1. Create space immediately. Step back and move to a safer location nearby (inside a business, near security, under bright lights, near other people).
  2. Verify only the essentials in your app. Check the license plate and the driver photo/name shown in-app. If they don’t match exactly, treat it as the wrong ride.
  3. Cancel the ride in the app. Pick the closest safety-related reason if available. Don’t handle fees or long support chats while you’re still exposed at the pickup point.
  4. Use in-app safety options if they’re visible—but default to 911 if you’re scared. If your app shows a safety toolkit/emergency option, you can open it while you move away. If you feel in danger, call 911.
  5. Capture minimal details while staying discreet. Screenshot the trip details (driver + vehicle info). If it’s safe, note the arriving car’s plate and your location (cross street/landmark).
  6. Report it once you’re in a safe place. Use the app’s “help/safety” reporting flow for “wrong vehicle / wrong driver / plate didn’t match,” and attach your screenshot.
  7. Rebook from a controlled pickup point. If you’re at an airport/venue, go to the official rideshare pickup zone or a staffed entrance. Otherwise, choose a busier, well-lit corner and wait away from the curb.
  8. If you already got in before noticing: ask to end the ride at a busy, well-lit place immediately and get out. If the driver refuses or you feel trapped, call 911.

What can wait

  • You don’t need to figure out whether it was a mix-up or intentional—mismatch means “no ride.”
  • You don’t need to confront the driver or prove you’re right.
  • You don’t need to deal with refunds, ratings, or detailed reporting until you’re safe and calm.

Important reassurance

It’s common to second-guess yourself in this moment. Declining a mismatched car is a normal, reasonable safety decision—being cautious here is appropriate.

Scope note

This guide covers first steps to avoid immediate harm at pickup. Platform investigations, refunds, and any follow-up with law enforcement can happen after you’re safe.

Important note

This is general information, not legal advice. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you’re unsure, it’s okay to cancel, relocate to a safer place, and rebook.
