What to do if…
an app update signs you out and your downloaded content or offline data is gone
Short answer
Don’t uninstall the app yet. First confirm you’re signed into the same account as before, then use the app’s Restore purchases / Restore downloads / Sync option and check whether it’s still re-downloading or restoring.
Do not do these things
- Don’t uninstall/reinstall the app as a first move (it can delete local/offline data permanently).
- Don’t clear the app’s storage/cache unless you’re sure your data is safely synced elsewhere.
- Don’t follow login links from texts/emails saying you were “signed out” — go directly to official account settings.
- Don’t keep switching between multiple accounts “to see if it appears” (it can tangle entitlements).
- Don’t pay anyone who offers “data recovery” via DMs or unofficial sites.
What to do now
- Freeze the situation and document it.
Take screenshots of: account email/username, empty library, error messages, subscription screen, and the app version. Note when the update happened. - Confirm you’re signed into the same account you used before (most common fix).
Check the app’s profile/account screen. Then confirm your device store account (Apple Account / Google account) matches the one that originally purchased the content. - Use the app’s built-in recovery options first.
Look for: Restore purchases, Restore downloads, Sync, Rebuild library, or Refresh subscription. Many services store access on the account and need a manual restore after sign-out. - Check if it’s a restore/re-download delay, not true loss.
Some apps re-index after updates. Stay on Wi-Fi and power; check any in-app “Downloads” queue or “Pending” list. - Validate your purchase/subscription from the platform side.
- Apple: check purchase history and subscriptions under the same Apple Account you used before.
- Google: check Play Store order history under the same Google account you used before.
- If your offline/local data is critical (drafts, notes, recordings): protect the device state.
- If you suspect the app might sync an “empty” state down from the cloud, consider temporarily turning off internet only if you can still access (or confirm) the local data offline.
- Avoid any “reset app” / “delete data” options until you’ve confirmed where data lives.
- Treat unexpected sign-outs as a possible security flag.
If anything feels off (unknown logins, password-change emails, unexpected charges): change your password, review recent security events, and enable 2-step verification/passkeys where available. - Contact official support with specifics that speed escalation.
Send: screenshots, device model/OS version, app version, exact timing, and whether you had offline downloads. Ask directly whether:- the offline data is stored locally vs server-side
- they can restore prior server-side state
- your purchases are linked to the correct account
- If you believe this was fraud or account takeover (USA-specific).
If you see unauthorized access or purchases, file a report at IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan. For cyber-enabled account takeover and online fraud, you can also file a complaint with the FBI’s IC3.
What can wait
- You don’t need to decide right now whether to cancel services, replace your device, or switch apps.
- You don’t need to post reviews or argue with support while you’re still collecting the basic facts.
- You don’t need to wipe your phone or “start over” to make progress.
Important reassurance
This happens to a lot of people after updates: the app signs out, offline downloads need re-authorization, or content is tied to a different account than expected. The safest early move is to avoid uninstalling and to focus on account verification + restore/sync.
Scope note
These are first steps to prevent irreversible loss and get you back to a stable place. Deeper steps (developer escalation, refunds, switching services) come later once you’ve confirmed what can be restored.
Important note
This guide is general information, not legal, financial, or professional technical advice. Apps differ widely in where offline data is stored and whether it’s recoverable. If you suspect identity theft or fraud, prioritize account security and official reporting channels.
