What to do if…
you are asked to show proof of accommodation for your full stay and you have gaps in bookings
Short answer
Stop and make your stay verifiable without inventing anything: collect the confirmations you already have, then cover real gaps with a real booking or a host confirmation and a simple date-by-date plan you can consistently explain.
Do not do these things
- Don’t fabricate reservations, edit screenshots, or provide an address you’re not actually using.
- Don’t buy non-refundable bookings in a panic unless you’re sure you can use them.
- Don’t unlock and hand over your phone. Show the specific confirmation screens yourself.
- Don’t over-explain or contradict yourself. Short, consistent answers are safer than a long story.
What to do now
- Create a one-screen accommodation timeline. In your notes app, list each date/night with: city, place name, address (if you have it), and contact (hotel/host). Mark the gaps.
- Pull up your “credibility bundle” immediately:
- Booking confirmations for nights you have.
- Proof of onward/return travel (ticket/itinerary).
- Proof you can pay for the trip (bank app screen/statement you already have).
- Fix each gap using the option that matches what you’ll truly do:
- Book real accommodation now for the missing nights (if your plan might change, prefer options that allow cancellation). Save the confirmation and add the address.
- If staying with someone: get a short written confirmation (text/email) with their address, your name, and dates. Screenshot it.
- If moving around: make your flexibility specific: list your next likely stop(s), where you’d stay, and be ready to show funds + onward/return travel.
- If this is happening with an airline before departure: ask what they require to accept (booking email(s), address list, onward ticket, funds). If they still refuse boarding, ask for a supervisor and ask them to note the reason/policy they’re relying on (if they’re able).
- If you’re being refused entry or held for questioning: stay calm and ask what document would satisfy them. If you need urgent help as a U.S. citizen, contact the nearest U.S. embassy/consulate or call the U.S. Department of State 24/7:
- From the U.S. & Canada: 1-888-407-4747
- From overseas: +1 202-501-4444
- After you’re through (or safely paused): save everything in one folder (screenshots of confirmations + your timeline). If you have to explain your plan again later, consistency helps.
What can wait
- You don’t need a perfect itinerary—only enough to show where you’ll sleep and that you can support yourself and leave on time.
- You don’t need to solve every future travel decision right now. Fix the immediate “gap proof” problem first.
- You don’t need to debate fine print in the moment. Focus on clear documents and a coherent plan.
Important reassurance
Getting asked for accommodation proof happens, especially when travel looks open-ended or when airlines are cautious about document compliance. Having gaps isn’t automatically a problem—the problem is when you can’t clearly show where you’ll be and how you’ll support yourself.
Scope note
This guide covers immediate stabilisation and harm-prevention in the moment. It doesn’t cover visas, long-term travel planning, or country-by-country entry strategy.
Important note
This is general information, not legal advice. Entry requirements and enforcement vary by country, passport/visa status, and the individual officer/airline. Always provide truthful information and follow local officials’ instructions.
