What to do if…
you cannot enter your accommodation because they require ID you cannot access

Short answer

Get to a safe, staffed place (lobby/front desk/nearby café) and contact the property and your booking provider right away while you gather any proof of identity you can access.

Do not do these things

  • Do not let anyone take your passport/ID “to the back” or hold it as collateral.
  • Do not send full card details or sensitive documents by text to an unknown number; use the booking platform’s official messaging or the property’s published contact.
  • Do not cancel the reservation in panic if you may need the record for support, relocation, insurance, or a card dispute.
  • Do not escalate into shouting or threats; it reduces the chance staff will help you explore options.
  • Do not follow strangers to another location to “fix it,” especially at night.

What to do now

  1. Move to the safest pause you can. Stay inside the lobby/front desk area if allowed. If you’re outside and it’s late, ask staff if you can wait indoors while you make calls and pull up documents.
  2. Ask for their exact policy and whether any alternatives exist. “If my government ID is temporarily inaccessible, what can you accept tonight?” Some properties may accept a different original ID, a photo/scan, or verification via the booking provider—but many will not, and staff may have no discretion.
  3. Assemble accessible proof immediately:
    • Reservation number / booking email (screenshot).
    • The card used to book (or proof of payment).
    • Any other ID you have (driver’s license, state ID, work/student ID), even if it may not be sufficient.
    • Any digital copy of your ID/passport you can reach (email/cloud).
  4. If the ID is inside the room/building: ask for a manager and ask whether they can escort you to retrieve it. They may still refuse until identity can be verified—so keep step 3 ready.
  5. Loop in the booking provider immediately (if you used one). Use in-app support and request:
    • They confirm the booking/guest name to the property in real time, and/or
    • They send the property your verified booking details, and/or
    • They relocate you if the property refuses entry. Keep messages in the app when possible.
  6. If your passport/ID is lost or stolen (not just inaccessible):
    • Report it to local police if appropriate and get a report/reference number (often helps with insurance and replacement).
    • If you’re a U.S. citizen abroad, report the passport lost/stolen and apply for a replacement through the nearest U.S. embassy/consulate. Police reports are typically not required, but can help document what happened.
  7. If you need a bed tonight: before paying for an alternative place, confirm their ID requirement (many will also require ID). Ask booking support to help find options that can work with what you have available, and prefer a staffed front desk so you can explain the situation.
  8. Protect your records for later. Save screenshots: refusal message, ID requirement notice, support chat logs, receipts, and dates/times. If you later need a refund request, insurance claim, or card dispute, documentation matters.

What can wait

  • You do not need to decide tonight whether to file complaints, post reviews, or pursue refunds.
  • You do not need to complete full document-replacement paperwork unless you must travel urgently.
  • You do not need to reorganize your entire trip right now—focus on safe shelter first.

Important reassurance

Being turned away over ID happens, especially when staff must follow strict check-in rules. It’s usually resolvable once you reach the right support channel (manager/booking provider) or can access acceptable proof.

Scope note

These are immediate first steps to keep you safe and housed. Next steps (refunds, insurance, replacement document timing) vary by country, property policy, and how you booked.

Important note

This is general information for urgent first actions, not legal advice. ID requirements can be set by law, local regulation, or property policy, and staff discretion may be limited.
