What to do if…
you discover an explicit deepfake image or video that uses your face

Short answer

Stop the spread and get specialist help: document where it is, report it on the platform, then contact the CCRI Image Abuse Helpline for confidential guidance on takedowns and next steps.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t negotiate or pay anyone threatening to “release more” (that often escalates demands).
  • Don’t post the content publicly to “prove it’s fake” (that can amplify it).
  • Don’t send the video/image to friends for “verification” (even trusted people can accidentally spread it).
  • Don’t hand over more photos, videos, ID documents, or money to anyone demanding them.
  • Don’t wipe everything in panic if you might want to report later (capture key details first).

What to do now

  1. Get to a steadier moment (even 2 minutes). If possible, ask one trusted person to stay with you while you take the next steps so you’re not doing this alone.
  2. Capture the essentials (quickly). Write down the site/platform, username/account, and the exact link(s). If it arrived by message, keep the message thread.
  3. Report it on the platform immediately. Use the closest option for non-consensual intimate imagery, sexual exploitation, impersonation, or harassment. Also report the account posting it.
  4. Contact the CCRI Image Abuse Helpline. It’s a specialized resource for image-based sexual abuse (including deepfakes).
    • Phone: 1-844-878-2274 (free; listed as available 24/7)
  5. If the content is an “intimate image/video” type, consider StopNCII.org. It can help participating platforms detect and prevent re-uploads using a digital fingerprint (a hash) generated on your device.
  6. If the person shown is under 18 (or you’re not sure), treat it as urgent. Do not share it further.
    • Use Take It Down (NCMEC) to create a hash to help participating platforms block/remove it.
    • Make a report to NCMEC’s CyberTipline.
  7. If you’re being extorted, stalked, or threatened, consider law enforcement reporting. You can report internet-enabled crimes to the FBI’s IC3 and/or contact local law enforcement—especially if threats feel immediate or you know who is doing it. When reporting online, be careful to use the official reporting portal (scammers sometimes imitate reporting sites).
  8. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Your safety comes first; content removal can follow.

If you may want to report later: keep the URL(s), account details, and a couple of screenshots showing the page and date/time on your device. Avoid forwarding the file.

What can wait

  • You do not need to figure out who made it right now.
  • You do not need to make a public statement today.
  • You can postpone longer-term decisions (legal advice, employer/school disclosure, broader reputation repair) until you have support and the panic has eased.

Important reassurance

Finding an explicit deepfake can feel violating and unreal at the same time—shock, nausea, anger, numbness, and spiraling thoughts are common reactions. You didn’t cause this. The immediate goal is to reduce spread, get help, and keep you safe.

Scope note

These are first steps to stabilize and connect you to specialist support and reporting pathways. Longer-term decisions can come later with more support and a clearer headspace.

Important note

This guide is general information for urgent first steps, not legal advice. If you feel unsafe right now, prioritize immediate safety and emergency help.
