What to do if…
you realise you boarded the wrong train or bus and you need to correct it quickly
Short answer
Stay on board until the next safe stop, then speak to onboard staff (train conductor or bus driver) immediately so you can switch to the correct service without creating ticket or safety problems.
Do not do these things
- Don’t try to force doors, exit between stops, or enter restricted areas (tracks, road shoulder, luggage bays).
- Don’t pull emergency equipment just because you’re on the wrong service.
- Don’t wait until you’re “caught” if your ticket doesn’t match—fixing it early is usually simpler.
- Don’t get into a confrontation with staff; keep it calm, brief, and focused on the next practical step.
- Don’t delete emails/app tickets—keep your proof of purchase visible.
What to do now
- Confirm the mistake quickly: check onboard screens/announcements, your e-ticket details, and your phone’s live location to confirm the direction and the next stop.
- Aim for a safe correction point:
- Train: plan to get off at the next staffed stop if you can, or the next stop if you’re clearly headed away from where you need to be.
- Bus: stay seated until the next normal stop/terminal, then get off and re-board the correct bus from a safe area.
- Tell staff right away (use a simple script):
- Rail: find the conductor and say: “I boarded the wrong train by mistake at [station]. I want to get off at the next stop and fix my reservation—what should I do?”
- Bus: tell the driver when safe: “I think I’m on the wrong bus—what’s the best stop/terminal to get off to correct it?”
- Use the carrier’s official change tools as soon as you can (or at the next stop):
- If you’re on Amtrak, open My Trip in the app/website to see change options, or speak to a station agent.
- If you’re on Greyhound, use Manage My Booking to change/exchange if possible, and keep your booking confirmation ready.
- Protect your ticket situation: keep your reservation number, last name, and e-ticket/confirmation ready. If staff instruct you to make a change or pay a difference, do it through official tools/agents rather than improvising.
- Make a quick note for later (1 minute): write down the time you boarded, where, and (if visible) the train/bus number. This helps if you need to explain a charge or request help later.
What can wait
- You do not need to decide right now whether you’ll request a refund, complain, or escalate—first get yourself onto the correct service safely.
- You do not need to solve the whole itinerary at once; focus on the next safe stop/terminal and one correction step.
- You do not need a long explanation—“wrong service by mistake, correcting now” is enough.
Important reassurance
Boarding the wrong service is a common, fixable mistake—especially in busy terminals or when gates change. Acting quickly and involving staff early usually keeps it much simpler.
Scope note
These are first steps only, aimed at preventing unsafe actions and avoiding avoidable ticket problems. More detailed fare adjustments or complaints can be handled once you’re no longer rushing.
Important note
This is general information, not legal or professional advice. Policies vary by carrier, agency, and ticket type, and staff instructions may depend on safety rules and operational constraints. If you ever feel unsafe, prioritize moving to a staffed, well-lit area and asking for help.
