What to do if…
you realise you left your passport in a taxi or rideshare and you have to travel the same day
Short answer
Immediately try to recover the passport through the taxi/rideshare (minutes matter), while you simultaneously pivot to “I may not travel today” and start the official urgent passport path (passport agency/center, or a U.S. embassy/consulate if you’re abroad).
Do not do these things
- Don’t spend long re-checking luggage—contact the driver/company right away.
- Don’t rely on photos of your passport to fly internationally; airlines and border officials usually require the physical document.
- Don’t pay “expediters” promising unofficial same-day results.
- Don’t wait until you’re at the gate to explain—go to the airline desk early to avoid missing rebooking options.
- Don’t share passport numbers/images publicly.
What to do now
- Capture the ride details (2 minutes): save the ride receipt, pickup/dropoff time, route, driver name, and any trip/support ID.
- Contact the driver/company immediately:
- Rideshare: use the in-app “lost item” process to contact the driver/support (keep communication in the app when possible).
- Taxi or car service: call dispatch/the company you booked with; give time, pickup/dropoff, and any cab number.
- If you’re at the airport: go straight to your airline’s check-in/customer service desk and say your passport is missing. Ask what they can do today (later flight, rebook rules, deadlines) so you don’t lose time standing in the wrong line.
- Set a hard pivot time (e.g., 30–60 minutes): if you don’t have confirmation that the passport is being returned very soon, move to urgent replacement planning.
- Start the official urgent route based on where you are:
- If you are in the U.S.: U.S. passport agencies/centers serve customers by appointment only who have urgent international travel in the next 14 calendar days, or need a foreign visa in the next 28 calendar days. Try to secure an appointment immediately (you may need to travel to an agency/center).
- If you are outside the U.S.: contact the nearest U.S. embassy/consulate for an emergency passport appointment based on your travel date.
- Report the passport lost/stolen (officially): submit the U.S. lost/stolen passport report (Form DS-64). If you’re applying in person for an urgent replacement, you’ll usually do this as part of that process.
- Prepare the replacement application pack now (so you can move fast when you get an appointment):
- Complete Form DS-11 (do not sign until instructed).
- Gather a physical photo ID (and a photocopy if you can), evidence of citizenship if available, one compliant passport photo, and your travel itinerary/confirmation.
- Reduce follow-on risk: if your passport was in a wallet/bag with cards, freeze/lock cards and secure your email account (it’s often the key to travel accounts and identity recovery).
What can wait
- You don’t need to figure out insurance or reimbursement right now—just keep receipts/screenshots and a brief timeline.
- You don’t need to decide whether to file a police report unless an official process specifically asks for it; prioritize retrieval and the official urgent passport pathway.
- You don’t need to “solve everything today”—your immediate goal is to stop further damage and take the fastest legitimate next step.
Important reassurance
It’s a common mistake, and panic makes it feel irreversible—but there are clear next actions. Focusing on quick recovery first, then switching to official urgent options, keeps you out of scams and time-wasting loops.
Scope note
These are first steps for the next few hours. The exact replacement route depends on whether you’re currently in the U.S. or abroad, and whether you can get an appointment in time.
Important note
This is general information, not legal advice. Document requirements and appointment availability can change; follow U.S. Department of State instructions and your airline’s travel document rules for your specific itinerary.
