What to do if…
you suspect you swallowed a caustic household product and your throat or mouth is burning

Short answer

If you have severe symptoms (especially breathing trouble, drooling, or can’t swallow), call 911 now. Otherwise, call Poison Control immediately: 1-800-222-1222 and follow their instructions.

Do not do these things

  • Do not induce vomiting.
  • Do not try to “neutralize” the chemical with vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, alcohol, or anything else.
  • Do not chug fluids “to dilute it”.
  • Do not take activated charcoal unless instructed.
  • Do not put anything in your mouth if you’re drooling, vomiting, coughing/choking, or struggling to swallow.
  • Do not “wait to see” if burning improves before contacting Poison Control.

What to do now

  1. Get the right help immediately.
    • If you have trouble breathing, choking/gasping, drooling, repeated vomiting, severe pain, confusion/drowsiness, fainting, seizures, or you can’t swallow: call 911 first.
    • If you’re alert and breathing okay: call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (free, confidential, 24/7). Stay on the line and follow their exact directions.
  2. Spit out anything still in your mouth.
    • Gently rinse your mouth with water and spit it out (do not swallow the rinse water).
    • You can repeat a few times to clear taste/residue, but stop if it triggers coughing, choking, or breathing trouble—and call 911 if that happens.
  3. Stay upright and as still as you can.
Don’t lie flat while you’re waiting for instructions or transport.
  4. If any got on skin/eyes/clothes, rinse right away.
    • Remove contaminated clothing carefully.
    • Rinse skin with running water.
    • If it splashed in an eye, flush gently with cool/lukewarm water while getting help.
  5. Collect what Poison Control/EMS will ask for.
    • The exact product (keep the container/label, or take clear photos of ingredients + warnings).
    • Time of exposure and estimated amount (sip vs mouthful).
    • Your symptoms (burning, drooling, coughing, vomiting, trouble swallowing).
  6. Escalate fast if you worsen.
    • If you start drooling, can’t swallow, develop breathing trouble, or become very sleepy/confused: call 911 (even if you already called Poison Control).

What can wait

  • You do not need to decide whether it was “enough to matter” — burning is enough to act.
  • You do not need to search the internet for home treatments or antidotes.
  • You do not need to force food or drink “to coat the throat” unless Poison Control tells you to.

Important reassurance

It’s common to panic and to be unsure what you swallowed. Getting real-time guidance from Poison Control (or 911 for severe symptoms) is the safest way to reduce harm, and avoiding vomiting/neutralizing helps prevent additional injury.

Scope note

This is first-steps-only guidance. Medical teams may recommend monitoring, pain control, and further evaluation depending on the product and your symptoms.

Important note

This is general information, not medical diagnosis or personal medical advice. If you suspect caustic ingestion or have mouth/throat burning, contact Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) and/or 911 urgently.
