What to do if…
your bicycle chain snaps or jams and you can’t pedal

Short answer

Your priority is a controlled stop: brake smoothly, signal if possible, and move yourself and the bike out of traffic (or off the trail) before trying to fix anything.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t keep mashing the pedals—this can jam the chain tighter, damage the derailleur, or cause a sudden skid.
  • Don’t reach into the chain/cog area while the wheel can spin or the bike can roll.
  • Don’t stop abruptly in a travel lane if you can roll to a shoulder, driveway, or parking lot safely.
  • Don’t ride “scooter-style” in traffic when you can’t pedal.
  • Don’t attempt a complicated roadside repair if you’re shaken, in low light, or next to fast-moving vehicles.

What to do now

  1. Stop pedaling and steady the bike. Keep a straight line and use both brakes smoothly. If you’re on a road, aim for the shoulder, a driveway/parking lot, or a wide, visible spot away from moving cars.
  2. Get to a safer pause and dismount. Move yourself and the bike fully out of the lane or off the trail. If you’re near an intersection, move beyond it (if safe) so you’re not stopped where drivers are turning.
  3. Make yourself visible. Turn on lights/flashers if you have them. At night, choose a well-lit place where you can be seen from a distance.
  4. Check what kind of problem it is (quick, no fiddling).
    • Snapped chain: look for loose chain pieces that could be a hazard (only retrieve if safe).
    • Jammed chain: don’t force rotation—jams near the rear wheel can lock the wheel unexpectedly.
  5. Try only the simplest safe reset if it’s low-risk.
    • If the chain just fell off (not wedged, not near spokes, pedals can move), you can often reseat it by keeping hands clear of teeth, lifting the rear wheel slightly, and gently turning the pedals by hand.
    • If it’s wedged hard (between cassette and spokes, wrapped tight, derailleur twisted, pedals won’t turn), stop trying to move it—walk the bike to a safer spot.
  6. Choose a “get moving safely” option.
    • If you have a quick link (master link) and a chain tool and you’re in a safe place, you may be able to do a temporary repair.
    • If not, walk the bike to a safer pickup point, call a friend/ride service, or head to a nearby bike shop.
  7. If you’re in a dangerous spot and can’t move the bike out of traffic, get help fast. Call 911 if you’re in immediate danger (for example, stranded in a live lane or on a blind curve). If it’s not an emergency, contact your local police non-emergency line or local city service line (numbers vary by area) once you’re in a safer place.

What can wait

  • You don’t need to figure out the “root cause” (wear, shifting, alignment) right now.
  • You don’t need to complete a full repair on the roadside.
  • You can postpone cleaning, lubrication, and drivetrain inspection until you’re safe and calm.
  • You don’t need to decide whether to replace parts today—getting off the road safely comes first.

Important reassurance

This kind of failure feels dramatic because it happens instantly, but once you’re safely out of traffic it becomes a standard mechanical issue. Getting to a safe stopping spot is the main win.

Scope note

These are first steps to reduce crash risk and avoid worsening the damage. A proper fix later may involve replacing the chain and checking the cassette/chainrings and derailleur for damage.

Important note

This is general safety information, not professional mechanical, medical, or legal advice. If you’re unsure, it’s dark, you’re injured, or traffic is fast, prioritize visibility and getting help over attempting a repair on the roadside.
