What to do if…
your boarding pass or itinerary disappears from the airline app shortly before departure
Short answer
Switch to a backup channel immediately: pull up your reservation on the airline website or in your confirmation email, then save a boarding pass offline. If you can’t get a usable pass fast, print one at a kiosk or go to the airline counter.
Do not do these things
- Don’t cancel/rebook just because the app looks empty.
- Don’t keep tapping “refresh” until your battery dies.
- Don’t share your login code/password with anyone offering help.
- Don’t join the TSA line if you’re not sure you’re checked in and have a boarding pass (get airline-side help first).
- Don’t leave it until the last minute “because you already checked in.”
What to do now
-
Pause and protect your phone (30 seconds).
Plug in if you can. Turn brightness up (barcodes scan more reliably). Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. -
Find your reservation details outside the app.
Search email/SMS for the airline confirmation and note the confirmation code/record locator, passenger name, flight number, and date. -
Use the airline website “My trips / Manage reservation” as your primary fallback.
Enter confirmation code + last name in a browser. If it shows your trip, retrieve the boarding pass there or use the airline option to email/text a boarding pass link (if available). -
Create an offline backup the moment the pass appears.
Add it to Apple Wallet / Google Wallet if offered and take a screenshot of the barcode/QR. Keep your screen clean and uncracked if possible. -
If the boarding pass won’t generate online, go straight to a kiosk or airline counter.
Use a self-service kiosk to print a boarding pass (often via confirmation code and/or ID scan). If kiosks can’t help, go to the staffed counter for reissue and any required checks. -
If you’re close to departure, prioritise the fastest “human” route.
Find “Customer service / Check-in / Bag drop” for your airline. Say: “My boarding pass vanished from the app; I need a boarding pass issued/printed.” -
If TSA screening is the immediate worry: use the right order.
At some airports using TSA Credential Authentication Technology (CAT), TSA may be able to verify you without scanning a boarding pass. But you still need to be checked in with the airline and have a boarding pass to board. If you don’t have a boarding pass yet, go to the airline kiosk/counter before committing to the TSA line. -
If it’s an international trip, expect extra checks.
Missing passes can mean the airline needs to verify passport/visa details. Don’t waste time reinstalling the app first — go to the counter for a document check and reissue.
What can wait
- You don’t need to diagnose the app issue or update your phone right now.
- You don’t need to change seats, add bags, or chase loyalty/PreCheck indicators in this moment.
- You don’t need to contact your credit card or travel insurance unless you actually miss the flight.
Important reassurance
This is a common failure mode (syncing, account issues, connectivity, document checks). Airlines routinely reissue boarding passes at kiosks and counters. The most important move is switching to a backup channel quickly and keeping your phone powered.
Scope note
These are immediate steps to get you a usable boarding pass and keep you moving toward screening and the gate. Longer follow-ups (account recovery, refunds, app support) can be done later.
Important note
This is general information, not legal or professional advice. Procedures vary by airline, airport, and itinerary. If departure is soon, go in person to the airline kiosk/counter and follow staff instructions.
