What to do if…
your boarding pass will not scan at the gate and boarding is in progress

Short answer

Step out of the line and get the gate agent to fix it immediately—many “won’t scan” problems are solved by reissuing the pass or clearing a system hold, but only while boarding is still open.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t keep scanning over and over while blocking boarding; it costs you the exact minutes you need.
  • Don’t leave the gate area to “figure it out” without telling a gate agent (you can miss the cutoff).
  • Don’t hand your phone or ID to strangers or leave bags unattended.
  • Don’t start deep phone troubleshooting (app reinstall, password reset) unless the gate agent tells you to.
  • Don’t assume you can “board later” because you’re already at the gate—doors can close quickly.

What to do now

  1. Move to the side immediately (stay within sight of the podium).
Have your boarding pass and your photo ID/passport ready in case the agent needs it to clear a hold or reissue your pass.
  2. Get the gate agent’s attention with one sentence.
“My boarding pass won’t scan and boarding is in progress—can you reissue it or check for a hold?”
If the agent is scanning other passengers, stand where they can see you and wait for the first natural pause.
  3. Do the fastest “scan fixes” while you’re waiting (under 60 seconds).
    • Turn brightness to max, reduce glare (tilt slightly), wipe smudges.
    • Open the boarding pass from the airline app if you can, not an email image.
    • If you have it in Apple Wallet/Google Wallet too, try that version if the app is lagging.
    • If you have a printed pass, flatten it; don’t fold through the barcode.
  4. Ask for the quickest fallback if your phone is the problem.
If your phone is dying, cracked, or won’t load the pass: “Can you print a paper boarding pass or reissue it at the podium?”
If they can’t, ask: “Where’s the nearest place to reprint, and do I still have time to go now?”
  5. Be ready for a quick verification step (don’t debate at the podium).
Sometimes the pass won’t scan because the airline system needs a refresh (identity details, seat reassignment, or required verification).
Your job: provide your ID/passport if asked, answer quick questions, and let the agent reissue/refresh.
  6. If you’re on an international itinerary, offer your passport promptly.
Gate scanning failures can happen when a passport check is still required in the airline system. Hand over your passport when asked so the agent can clear you.
  7. If you’re traveling with others, prevent accidental separation.
Tell your group to wait nearby. Keep essentials (ID, phone, wallet, medications) with you. Don’t let anyone take your bags “to help” unless the gate agent confirms it’s okay.

What can wait

  • You do not need to troubleshoot why it happened right now; you need a pass that scans before boarding closes.
  • You do not need to decide about refunds, compensation, or formal complaints in the boarding area.
  • You do not need to call customer service while standing there; the gate agent is the fastest route in this moment.

Important reassurance

This happens to plenty of travelers and is often fixable in minutes. The key is not to “fight the scanner” but to get a gate agent to reissue or clear whatever the system is blocking—while the flight is still actively boarding.

Scope note

These are first steps for the immediate “won’t scan at the gate” moment. If boarding closes before it’s resolved, the next steps become airline-specific (rebooking, standby, missed flight procedures).

Important note

This is general information, not legal advice or a guarantee of boarding. Airlines control boarding and can close flights for safety, timing, and operational reasons. Requirements and options vary by carrier, airport, and itinerary.
