What to do if…
your burglar or fire alarm system is sounding and you can’t silence it or verify why

Short answer

Assume it could be real: get everyone to a safer place immediately, and if there’s any sign of fire/smoke/heat or a possible intruder, leave and call 911.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t keep troubleshooting inside if you smell smoke, see haze, feel unusual heat, or anyone feels dizzy/sick.
  • Don’t walk the house looking for “what set it off” if an intruder is possible.
  • Don’t permanently disable alarms “just to get some sleep.”
  • Don’t call 911 to “cancel” an alarm dispatch if your locality instructs you to cancel through your monitoring station instead.
  • If it’s a neighbor’s alarm, don’t confront anyone or enter their property yourself.

What to do now

  1. Get to a safer position first. Move everyone to a spot where you can think clearly (outside, or a locked room with an exit route). Bring your phone; grab keys only if they’re immediately reachable.
  2. Quick danger check (don’t roam). Look/listen/smell for smoke, burning, unusual heat, forced entry, breaking glass, voices, or movement. If you can’t confidently rule out danger, leave.
  3. If you suspect fire or can’t quickly rule it out:
    • Evacuate and call 911.
    • Stay outside until responders say it’s safe.
  4. If you suspect an intruder (or see signs of a break-in):
    • Don’t search the house. Get to a safer place and call 911.
  5. If it’s your monitored security alarm and it may be accidental:
    • Call your alarm monitoring station immediately (use the number in your app/paperwork). Give your passcode and tell them you can’t silence/verify the cause.
    • Follow their directions for confirming/cancelling dispatch. (Many jurisdictions explicitly tell residents not to call 911 to cancel; they require cancellation through the monitoring station.)
  6. If it’s a smoke alarm that seems nuisance-related (e.g., cooking/steam) but it won’t stop:
    • Use the unit’s Test/Silence (Hush) feature if available so you can regain control and reassess.
    • Ventilate only if you’re confident there’s no fire.
    • If you cannot silence it or verify why it’s sounding, default back to Step 3 (evacuate and call 911).
  7. If it’s not your alarm (neighbor/business) and there’s no sign of danger:
    • Use your city/county’s non-emergency number or local noise/code enforcement process.
    • If you see evidence of a crime in progress or danger, call 911.

What can wait

  • Taking devices down, opening panels, cutting power, or any wiring-related troubleshooting.
  • Deciding whether to replace/upgrade the system or change monitoring.
  • Documenting the incident or dealing with fines/fees (handle after the situation is safe).

Important reassurance

A stuck alarm is designed to be hard to ignore, so your body may go straight into panic. Choosing “safety first” (getting out or calling for help if you can’t verify) is a normal, protective response.

Scope note

This is first-step guidance to reduce risk and prevent irreversible mistakes. After the immediate moment, you may need your monitoring company, landlord/building management, or a licensed alarm/fire protection professional to fix the underlying fault.

Important note

This is general information, not professional safety, security, or legal advice. When you can’t confirm what triggered an alarm, prioritize immediate safety and contacting appropriate local services.
