What to do if…
your handbrake or parking brake will not release and you are stuck where you parked
Short answer
Keep the vehicle stationary and visible, then try the correct release sequence for your brake type (especially electronic parking brakes). If it still won’t release after one or two careful attempts, stop forcing it and call roadside assistance/tow.
Do not do these things
- Don’t “drive through it” or use heavy throttle to break it free — you can overheat brakes, damage parts, or cause a sudden jump.
- Don’t repeatedly force the lever/pedal/switch if it feels jammed.
- Don’t get under the vehicle in a parking lot/roadside area to pull cables or pry components.
- Don’t use open flames/torches, or pour boiling water onto wheels/brakes.
- Don’t ignore burning smell, smoke, loud grinding, or strong resistance — stop and get help.
What to do now
-
Make your location safe and predictable to others.
- Turn on hazard lights if you’re in a lot/garage with moving traffic nearby.
- If your vehicle’s position creates immediate danger (for example, you’re in a travel lane, on a blind curve, or at high risk of being hit), stay belted with hazards on and call 911.
-
Match the release method to your brake type (don’t guess).
- Hand lever: press/hold the button; it often helps to lift slightly, then lower fully while holding the button (don’t force it).
- Foot-operated parking brake pedal: press it again fully to release, with your foot on the main brake pedal.
- Electronic parking brake (EPB): many vehicles require the brake pedal to be firmly pressed while you operate the EPB switch, with ignition on/engine running. If the dash shows prompts/conditions, follow them.
-
Do one clean “power cycle” attempt (then stop forcing).
- Turn the vehicle off, wait a few seconds, restart.
- Press the main brake pedal firmly and try the release again.
- If the dash shows a brake-system fault message/light and the brake won’t release, treat it as not safe to drive and arrange a tow.
-
Stop immediately if you see signs of brake drag/seizure.
- Burning odor, smoke/heat from a wheel area, grinding noises, or strong resistance = stop trying to move the vehicle and call for help.
-
If freezing weather is likely, keep it gentle.
- Let the engine run briefly to warm generally, then try the correct release sequence once more.
- Avoid improvised heat/chemicals around brakes; if it doesn’t release quickly, move to towing/assistance.
-
Call the right help early.
- Call your roadside assistance (AAA/insurer/manufacturer assistance) or a tow company and say: “Parking brake stuck on; vehicle will not move.”
- If you’re in a managed lot/garage, notify security/management that a tow/roadside call is in progress (to reduce the risk of being ticketed/towed as “abandoned”).
-
While waiting, keep the vehicle stable and reduce stress.
- Keep transmission in Park (automatic) or in 1st gear (manual).
- Save your exact location (garage level, section, nearest pillar number, cross-streets). Keep your phone charged.
What can wait
- You do not need to diagnose whether it’s a cable, caliper, drum shoes, or an electronic module right now.
- You do not need to pick a repair shop or approve repairs while you’re stuck.
- You do not need to try multiple “DIY fixes” beyond the safe, correct release sequence and one restart attempt.
Important reassurance
A stuck parking brake is scary but common (especially after cold/wet conditions or long parking). The safest approach is to avoid forcing motion, keep things controlled and visible, and bring in roadside/tow help if it won’t release quickly.
Scope note
These are immediate first steps to prevent injury or damage. If the brake won’t release after correct operation and one restart attempt, it usually needs professional inspection or towing.
Important note
This guide is general information for immediate first actions, not mechanical or legal advice. If you’re in immediate danger where you’re parked, prioritize safety and emergency services.
