What to do if…
your photo library duplicates itself and you are afraid of deleting originals

Short answer

Don’t delete anything yet—first create a separate backup/export you won’t edit, then use your platform’s built-in duplicate merge features (not mass manual deletion).

Do not do these things

  • Don’t bulk-delete “duplicates” while you’re still unsure what caused them.
  • Don’t empty “Recently Deleted” / “Trash” until you’re confident your backup/export is complete.
  • Don’t install a “duplicate cleaner” as your first step (it may remove the wrong copy or strip metadata).
  • Don’t keep toggling cloud backup/sync on multiple devices; that can re-trigger uploads.
  • Don’t move/rename big photo folders on a computer while a cloud photo app is still syncing.

What to do now

  1. Stabilize (reduce new changes).

    • Pick one device to work from (preferably a computer).
    • On other devices, avoid repeatedly opening Photos/Google Photos while you make a safety copy.
  2. Create a safety copy you can keep untouched.

    • Apple Photos / iCloud Photos: make a full download/export using Apple’s supported download methods for your setup (so you have a copy outside the live-sync library).
    • Google Photos: export via Google Takeout (Google Photos selected) and store the archive separately.
    • Windows/external drive: copy the entire photo folder/library to an external drive or a clearly labeled backup folder you won’t modify.
  3. Confirm whether you have true duplicates (don’t rely on storage alone).

    • Open a few “duplicate pairs” and compare: file size, edits, timestamps, filename, and whether both versions actually open.
    • Treat storage changes as only one clue (cloud “optimized storage” can make this misleading).
  4. Use built-in “merge duplicates” options when available.

    • iPhone: Photos → CollectionsUtilitiesDuplicatesMerge (album may not appear until indexing completes).
    • Mac Photos: open Duplicates in the sidebar → select → Merge.
    • Prefer “merge” over “delete” when offered.
  5. Stop the most common duplication loop (migration + re-upload).

    • If this started after a new phone/computer setup, stop manually copying camera folders into locations that are also being backed up to the same cloud account.
    • Make sure only one “source of truth” is backing up (e.g., the phone camera roll), rather than phone + a copied DCIM folder + a synced desktop folder.
  6. If anything suggests account takeover, secure access first (then clean).

    • Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for the account connected to your photos (Apple/Google/Microsoft).
    • Review signed-in devices/sessions and remove anything unfamiliar.
    • Update the account password if you suspect someone else accessed it.

  • You do not need to delete anything today.
  • You do not need to organize albums, fix dates, or dedupe everything in one sitting.
  • You can wait to troubleshoot the root cause until after you have a backup/export you trust.
  • You can postpone any third-party cleanup tools until you’ve confirmed you have a recoverable backup.
