What to do if…
your user profile loads blank and your desktop files appear to be missing

Short answer

Stop making changes, and first verify whether you’re signed into a temporary/wrong profile or your Desktop/Documents are being redirected by OneDrive/iCloud. If anything suggests malware/ransomware, disconnect from the internet before doing more.

Do not do these things

  • Don’t start reinstalling apps, resetting the PC, or “starting over” until you’ve checked the common locations where files usually still exist.
  • Don’t download random “recovery/cleaner” utilities you find in search results — many are unsafe and can overwrite recoverable data.
  • Don’t pay a ransom or call pop-up “support” numbers if you see a ransomware-style message.
  • Don’t plug in external backup drives until you’re confident the machine isn’t infected.
  • Don’t sign out of cloud sync accounts in a panic without first confirming whether your files are stored there.

What to do now

  1. Preserve what you’re seeing.
    Take photos/screenshots of the blank desktop, sign-in username, any warnings, and the time/date. This helps IT support and any official report.

  2. If you suspect ransomware/malware, isolate the device immediately.
    If you saw a ransom note, sudden file extension changes, or security alerts: disconnect Wi-Fi/Ethernet. If it’s a work/school device, contact IT/security right away and stop troubleshooting on your own.

  3. Confirm you’re in the correct account/profile (a common explanation).

    • Windows: check the signed-in user. A “new” desktop can mean Windows logged you into a temporary profile or a different account. Check C:\Users\ for your original user folder.
    • Mac: confirm you’re in the right user (System Settings → Users & Groups) and look for your files in the correct home folder.
  4. Check “moved, not deleted” locations before doing anything else.

    • Cloud web view first (safer): sign in via browser to OneDrive/iCloud Drive and look for Desktop/Documents content or recently moved items. When searching, be cautious of lookalike “support” sites and ads — prefer official pages you already trust.
    • If OneDrive is on your Windows PC: check C:\Users\<your-username>\OneDrive\Desktop and C:\Users\<your-username>\OneDrive\Documents.
    • Recycle/Trash: check OneDrive Recycle bin (if OneDrive is involved) and local Recycle Bin/Trash.
    • Local user folder: check the original C:\Users\<your-username>\Desktop / Documents (Windows) or the correct home folder (Mac).
  5. If you recently updated Windows, check for a “previous install” folder.
    If C:\Windows.old exists, search inside it for a distinctive missing file name, or for “Desktop” / “Documents”. Don’t delete Windows.old while you’re still looking for files.

  6. If OneDrive is involved, use Microsoft’s built-in rollback options.
    On OneDrive on the web, check Recycle bin and (if available to you) “Restore your OneDrive” to undo mass changes. This is safer than dragging folders around while you’re unsure what happened.

  7. If iCloud “Desktop & Documents” is involved (Mac), verify the setting and location.
    Desktop/Documents can appear “missing” locally if they’re now stored in iCloud Drive. Check iCloud Drive settings and look in iCloud Drive for those folders/files.

  8. If this is a managed device (work/school), escalate instead of experimenting.
    Ask for helpdesk/IT and tell them: “Profile looks blank; Desktop/Documents appear missing; possible folder redirection or temporary profile.”

  9. If you believe this was a cyber incident, report it through official channels.

    • File a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) (especially for ransomware, fraud, or account compromise).
    • Use CISA ransomware response guidance/checklists if you’re coordinating response for a business/organization.

What can wait

  • You don’t need to choose a paid recovery service today.
  • You don’t need to factory reset/reinstall the OS right now — that can reduce recovery options.
  • You don’t need to change every password immediately until you have signals this is security-related (but avoid logging into sensitive accounts on the affected device if you suspect malware).

Important reassurance

A blank desktop and “missing” files is often a sign of the wrong/temporary profile or cloud redirection — not instant permanent deletion. Slowing down and checking the likely locations first usually protects your chances of recovery.
