What to do if…
your vehicle warns the electronic parking brake has a fault when you need to leave it parked
Short answer
Don’t leave the vehicle relying on the electronic parking brake alone—secure it with the transmission (Park/gear), set the wheels correctly toward the curb for hill parking, and use wheel chocks if available. If you can’t confidently prevent rolling, keep it attended and call roadside assistance.
Do not do these things
- Don’t assume the EPB is holding just because there’s a light or you hear a motor sound.
- Don’t leave it on a hill if you’re not fully sure it can’t roll.
- Don’t keep toggling the EPB repeatedly “to clear the warning” while the vehicle isn’t fully secured.
- Don’t crawl under the vehicle or try a manual release you’re unsure about.
- Don’t do any test that lets the vehicle roll toward people, traffic, or property.
What to do now
-
Move to the lowest-risk spot you can (priority: level ground).
If you’re on an incline and the vehicle is driveable, relocate to a flat, safe area (level part of a lot/driveway) before you turn it off. -
Secure it with the transmission before you take your foot off the brake.
- Automatic: keep your foot on the brake, shift fully into P (Park).
- Manual: keep your foot on the brake, leave it in 1st gear (uphill) or reverse (downhill).
-
If you must park on a hill, turn the wheels the standard curb-way.
- Headed downhill: turn front wheels into the curb (toward the side of the road).
- Headed uphill with a curb: turn front wheels away from the curb, then let the vehicle roll gently until the tire touches the curb.
(If there’s no curb, aim the wheels so the vehicle wouldn’t roll into the street.)
-
Use wheel chocks if you can—especially on any slope.
Proper chocks are best. If you don’t have them, only improvise if you can do so safely with a stable, non-crushable object that won’t slide or splinter. If you’re not confident it will hold, treat that as a reason not to leave the vehicle unattended. -
Do a controlled “stillness check” only if it’s safe to do so.
Only if there is clear space and you can stop instantly: with Park/gear set and wheels turned, gently ease off the foot brake just enough to confirm it stays still. Abort immediately at any movement. -
If you can’t secure it, keep it attended and call for help.
Call roadside assistance (insurance/AAA/manufacturer) and say: “Electronic parking brake fault; I’m not confident it will hold when parked.”
If the vehicle is in a position where it could roll into traffic or people, call 911 for immediate danger; otherwise contact local non-emergency help as appropriate. -
If you must step away briefly, reduce the chance someone else moves it unknowingly.
Leave a visible note: “EPB fault—may not hold reliably. Vehicle left in Park/gear. Please secure before moving.”
What can wait
- You don’t need to troubleshoot the warning now or decide which part is failing.
- You don’t need to reset systems or disconnect the battery while trying to leave it parked.
- You can wait to decide on repair shop, warranty, or towing logistics once it’s safely secured.
Important reassurance
A sudden “parking brake fault” message can feel like an emergency because roll-away risk is real. Creating redundancy (Park/gear, correct wheel-to-curb positioning, chocks, and roadside help if needed) is a calm, practical way to protect people and property.
Scope note
This is first-step guidance to prevent an unattended roll-away and buy time. Procedures vary by vehicle, so the next phase is following your owner’s manual and getting professional assistance.
Important note
This is general information, not mechanical or legal advice. Vehicle systems vary widely; follow your owner’s manual for your make/model/year and use professional roadside assistance if you cannot secure the vehicle confidently.
